Drain Blockage: What Should I do?
Hi all, First time poster here, hopefully someone can help! My partner and I moved into a rented property (house) at the beginning of May, and we've been doing everything we can to make sure it's maintained properly. Since this is our first house and it's older than the last place we lived (newer build flats), we make sure…

Aedis Building Inspectors unreachable
We were due a final inspection by Aedis this week, but now understand that as they are no longer covered by insurance, they are doing no inspections or issuing certificates. I have spoken with my local building control and they advised a Regularisation application but that I first get a copy of my case notes and then…

Locked in my garden by my neighbour
I know this sound a bit like a Jeremy Kyle title but this happened today. But let's start at the beginning. A new tenant moved in the building a few months ago. Then cigarette butts starting being thrown out a window in the garden. A note was placed on the front door about it and it stopped. Then lots of biscuit and…

Cheap Yankee candles
I like yankees, but I prefer candles with the straight modern sides, I think yankees are starting to look old fashioned now. I was looking for a candle wick trimmer on eBay and I came across these. https://www.groupon.co.uk/deals/yankee-candle-four-large-two-wick-tumblers I’ve seen them before on the high street I’m sure…

Gripfill and holes in wall
I have some big holes around my window where the plugs have pulled out or the plaster has crumbled from drilling. My brother swears by Gripfill for just about everything (remember My Big Fat Greek Wedding where her dad swore by Windex for any ailment?). He said if I fill the holes and let it harden off for about 3 days I…

Washing Machine in downstairs WC - not possible?
Hi folks, We are doing some internal renovations which include building a small downstairs WC. We were hoping to include a washing machine in the space but the builder has just said: "I have just spoken to the electrician concerning the washing machine as the regs are always being updated. I don’t think we can accommodate…

Sockets and oven not working
Hi MSE, thanks in advance for your help. In short our oven and the sockets in our bedroom aren't working, and I'm wondering if the two are connected somehow or with small fixes I've done recently. Small things I've fixed in the last week: -The smoke alarm started beeping. I switched off the corresponding fuse, replaced the…

Loft humid in the summer time
So I poked my head into the loftspace of my bungalow. As well as being hot, it felt quite humid. This I thought was a bit strange. Summertime lofts should be hot, but they should have the same humidity as the outside air temperature - unless of course there's a buildup of moisture underneath the roofing felt. So my…

New driveway
Hi, I am considering having a driveway laid which at the moment is a broken path with a side strip of gravel. My options would be concrete with block edging, pressed (patterned) concrete, tarmac with block edging and complete block paving. Finances are restricted so am interested to know from anyone here which would be the…

Electric board running new supply cable - damaging flooring
I have been contacted by the electricity board that they will need to run a new feed to my home because the old feed is looped through the neighbors property and they want their end capped. They advised that this would be at no cost to myself and they would make good any damage. The planned route has to pass a solid tiled…

Electrician Quote
Hi, Any sparkies about? I had an electrical safety check done. It failed with a C2 level failure because the 30ma RCD failed to trip in the consumer unit. I've already paid for this initial visit/check. What is a reasonable quote for the same electrician to replace a 30 ma RCD in the consumer unit and pass the electrical…

Minimum height when laying porcelain tiles?
Hi Strange question I know but I'm wondering what the the minimum height addition would be when laying porcelain tiles? We're trying to figure out if we have enough room to install a low profile underfloor heating kit. Problem is our front door is only 34mm above our concrete floor! That doesn't give us much room to play…

What's fair? (plumbing-related)
Hi all. Had a 'quote' of a plumber who came round to do that, few weeks ago. It consisted of a figure on a Facebook message. He advised when he could start and I indicated that once I received a quote from him clarifying various things (see below) I would instruct him and we could get going - all agreed that he would send…

Bathstore purchase now gone bust
We signed up to buy a bathroom from BathStore (went into receivership today). We signed a finance agreement to pay for goods and installation to pay in 12 months time. No goods have been delivered yet and if they did they won't now fit. Can the finance company still hold us to pay in full in 12 months time?
