Sealing vinyl floors?
I've just had vinyl in the kitchen and bathroom laid. The fitter said to use some mastiq around the edging to seal it to make sure it's water tight. Would clear Silicoln sealant be the right product to use. Around the edges ? As what is mastiq lol?

Gravel for Driveway
Hello all We have a small (potential) drive (about 24 sq/m) that is partially paved at the moment. The remainder had big bushes that we have now taken out and so only soil is left now. We were thinking of carrying on the block paving but I think it will be hard to match it up plus expensive. We've decided to use gravel for…

Tiling Kitchen Dilemma, opinions please
Hi my mum is having a new kitchen fitted. At the moment she has tiled splashbacks under the wall cupboards and also there is a radiator wall which is tiled half way up and wallpapered at the top. My husband is fitting the new kitchen and he says the radiator wall would look better without any tiles and just painted in a…

issue with drains
Hello I need to fit gully grids as all of them but the way pipes have been fitted makes it impossible and I was wondering if there is anything I could do DIY or I need to get someone to do it for me. On the first photo the grey pipe goes directly into the gully. I assume I need to cut it but how? This is a waste pipe for…

Combi boiler nightmare
Not sure if anybody can help me out here, who may have had this issue and resolved it somehow. I bought a house a month ago and the boiler, serviced by the seller 10/05/17 and allegedly in perfect working order, has this bizarre habit of just heating up water for no reason, and for hours on end. When it's in this apparent…

Neighbour building wall
My neighbour at the back of me has decided to build a wall - where the boundary line should be. This is of course fine with me but he has asked if i was willing to contribute to the cost. Not cleaning the walls before painting...
Last week I painted my living room and have been really pleased with the results. A few weeks previously I noticed a bit of a sooty build-up around where I often have candles burning. I tried to clean a small area of it but made the mess much worse, which was part of my reason for painting. I have never painted or really…

Problem with Neff built in oven
We have a Neff B1442 that has gone wrong somehow. It still has power to it as the fan and light work, but none of the elements heat up. I was wondering if it was the thermostat but the oven had obviously heated up to a certain degree and the light was going out if I turned the temperature down to below the temperature it…

Plinth Over Garage
Help needed please! A wooden plinth has fallen off of my garage right above the door, approx 10 cms wide. It was previously held on to a metal lintel with glue, but I'm not sure I can refix it with glue as there is nowhere to put a clamp! It's a real puzzle (I know nothing about DIY), the rain can currently get in too & I…

Time for a new boiler (thread)
It's time to replace my Suprima 50 (complete with refurb PCB of course). I live in a very hard water area, and heating specialist #1 (having seen how sludgy my heating water is) has recommended a magnetic filter, plus chemical inhibitor, together with a Baxi ecoblue advance and new pump. I saw a few threads previously…

Decorating Downstairs Loo
I'm looking for ideas on best way to decorate the walls of my downstairs bog. It's a very small add-on to the back of the house - ie 3 external walls so it gets a bit cold, although I do have a radiator in there. It's just a wc and a small vanity basin. Previously, I papered the walls with a blown vinyl tile effect paper,…

Over garage extension questions
Hi guys, We are considering extending our 3 bed semi by adding a 4th bedroom over the garage. First question. Our stairs go up to the first floor on the right hand side of the house and bend left onto the landing for the 3 bedrooms and bathroom. We would be looking to have the stairs also bend right to go out over the…

Rewiring....what other cables should I consider
As a part of the house renovation work we are rewiring the house. I will also ask for satellite cable and digital aerial cable to be run through the walls to allow for sockets in various rooms. A friend suggested Cat6 cable but I am not sure about the benefit of that considering that most things now are wireless. Any…

Old Style Fuse Box user - some ceiling lights out
Hope someone can offer some assistance whilst I am waiting on the expert help of an electrician . It's probably a familiar poser and easy to solve for those who know their stuff, but I'm clueless in the dept. Basically, arrived home from work the other night. Popped into the bathroom, pulled the light cord and the bulb…
