Hand held vacuum cleaner for stairs/narrow areas
Hi Can anyone recommend one of the above please? i have a Dyson for larger floor areas but it isn't as good for stairs. I want a reasonably lightweight one. I did buy a Vax one but it turned out to be pretty useless because it lost charge so quickly. I don't want to make the same mistake again.

Planning permission question
We have just received planning permission for a two storey rear extension. However, we have noticed, rather belatedly, that the upstairs and downstairs window on the back left side don't line up in the drawings - the downstairs window is about 12cm to the left of the upstairs one (windows are the same size). This looks…

Adding a window to a bathroom
I'm thinking about purchasing my first home and I've found a potential 2 bedroom purchase which is a new build. Some are off plan, some have started to be built. One thing that bugs me about it is that the bathroom upstairs doesn't have a window. How easy/difficult would it be for a builder to add a window to it? How much…

Problem with smelly sinks
Hello, We have an odor in our master bath that's like old gym clothes. It seems to come from the two sinks. When the bathroom is closed up, it takes a few hours for the odor to build up, and it gets worse when the weather is cool and damp. I've flushed the overflow and the drain with chlorine bleach, baking soda and…

Combi Boiler Question
Hi, This week we replaced our ancient conventional boiler with a combi. One thing I've noticed is that occasionally throughout the day the hot water fires up even when the taps are switched off... it's this normal? I was assuming that it's just to maintain the temperature of the water in the boiler but thought I'd check as…

Installing soil pipe parallel to wall by removing some internal bricks
A soil pipe from a toilet in a 1930s cavity wall brick house cannot go directly out the wall as it would go out under the kitchen roof. The soil pipe has to therefore run at a slight downwards angle a distance of 1 metre from the toilet to a location on the wall where it could go out and not hit the kitchen roof. The soil…

building work not matching plans
We are having our loft converted into a bedroom and en suite. The stairs are in, so I've finally been up to have a look. Most of it looks fine but the some of the partition walls that have been put up yesterday are in the wrong place if I look at the plan, meaning notably that if I have a cupboard put in where I planned…

FCU to socket?
I am in a new build house. On one wall in the living room there is an unswitched FCU which I was told by the site agent when I moved in that it was for a fireplace. We don't want a fireplace and have no other sockets on that wall. Is it possible to simply take off the faceplate and wire a normal switched socket to it…

Flat roof insulation
Hello, I've moved into a house with an old flat roof extension which has a bathroom in it. I've stripped out most of the room and removed the plasterboard ceiling. It has exposed the underside of the roof which did not look well insulated. There were a few rolls of old fibreglass type quilt and I removed those too so I…

Why Does America Have Top Loading Washing Machines?
Why does America have mainly top loading washing machines, yet ours aren't? I know the UK can get top loaders but surely they're easier to... well load?
