Carpet and underlay
We're moving soon and will need to re-carpet the house. There are 3 bedrooms plus living/dining and extra living room, and hall to carpet. I'm happy to go with cheaper carpet for the bedrooms. Colour I'm hoping to keep the same downstairs, and then the bedrooms will be similar colour but cheaper hopefully. I'm thinking…

Should I replace my boiler?
My boiler has broken down and the plumber thinks it is the fan that has gone. It's a relatively expensive part so going to cost about £170 to fix (although he is tring to get it cheaper for me). I'm not sure how old the boiler is but at a minimum it's 8 years and probably more (going to look through some paperwork to…

In my new house the third bedroom looks out onto a slate roof. The house is set In a semi rural location with open views front and back so it seems a shame that the third bedroom has no view. their is a possibility of switching the room with the bathroom which looks out slightly on the house next door but with some green…

Repairing old grouting between patio slabs - help please!
As poor ol' DH is now unable to do any jobs, due to ill health, it's all fallen to me. He refuses to have "A Man" in to do anything. The patio is Cotswold Stone and was laid about 15 years ago, and there are some bits that have broken up, and others that have just disappeared. I understand that you can get something called…

Building Over Private Sewer/Drain
We are currently looking at a 3 bed property with ample room to extend, if we knock down the attached garage(several neighbours have done this). Although searches threw nothing up, we did further research ourselves, and discovered that there is a drain (about 32cm diameter I think) which runs under the current garage and…

Insulating a Mansard Roof - any experiences?
Hi all this is my first post here, hope it's in the right place. I live in the upper half of a terraced house which has been converted into 2 flats. The roof is a mansard style - flat roof at the top, with sloping slated sides front & back (if that isn't clear - draw a square, cut off the top 2 corners at an angle & that's…

New patio - concrete between slabs breaking up
We recently had a new patio area put down which involved raising the ground level. The slabs were laid on compacted gravel. They have only been on a couple of days, but already some of the concrete between the slabs seems to be breaking up as you can see here http://img.skitch.com/20100707-cpttkyh52w3cm6q22bkkkphbsm.jpg.…

Removing scratches on ceramic hob???
Hi there I very stupidly scraped a cooking pot across the black ceramic hob on our brand new Hotpoint Electric Cooker!! Not a happy bunny!:( I know its probably not likely, but is there anything I could use to make it look a little bit better. It would take some sort of miracle to get those scratch marks off, but are there…

Howdens vs Ikea kitchens - which is best overall? Any advice?
Hi, My partner is getting a new kitchen soon and I was wondering what was best for value and quality. They have had a couple of quotes off a Howdens salesman, obtained because the fitter is a "contact". Apparently the only way to get a Howdens quote. I have to say I am not that impressed with the price. They wanted a mid…

Blocked pipe to storm drain - help needed
Hi there, please help! Am trying to find out who is responsible for clearing pipe leading to storm drain and/or how to clear it! We have an 1890s house. Double Storey Extension
I know this is a 'how long is a piece of string' kind of question but... We are looking at buying a house which needs a 2 storey extension. It is 3.5m x 5.7m. What might one expect to pay on average per sqm and does this price usually include electrical work, plastering, plumbing, roof? Finally, is there anything in…
