Carpet and underlay

We're moving soon and will need to re-carpet the house.

There are 3 bedrooms plus living/dining and extra living room, and hall to carpet. I'm happy to go with cheaper carpet for the bedrooms. Colour I'm hoping to keep the same downstairs, and then the bedrooms will be similar colour but cheaper hopefully.

I'm thinking 80/20 for the downstairs, then just something cheaper for bedrooms. Is 80/20 twist a good option? That's what we have in our living room just now and it has lasted well compared to the polyester 'two step' from Carpetright.

Also for the underlay. Previously we bought the rubber bubbly type, we got it in B&Q and got the brown thicker stuff for the living room, and the green standard one for the rest of house. I'm tempted to buy that again as it is very easy to lay and we might do that ourselves to save cash, but I hear everyone saying about Cloud 9 on here.

Any thoughts? Cheap places to buy would also be helpful!

When I worked as a Showhouse Designer, we almost always specified an 80/20 twistpile carpet as they wear so well. Occasionally we'd use a velvet pile, but they do show wear & dirt more quickly. A really good, double duty underlay will make even a cheaper carpet look and feel better; in an older property with uneven boards it's practically essential.
  • I got my last lot of underlay from Trade-priced. cloud 9 for just over £2.50/m. There are a couple of places that do similar prices, the choice of which comapny to use is more down to how much you need, as some are cheaper and charge delivery, and some are more expensive, but delivery is free. Just add in all the stuff you need, including gripper, doorbars, underlay etc for a couple of sites and order from the one with the lowest total.

Fitters like Cloud 9 - it's easy to lay, and softer. If you want ultimate durability use a rubber crumb underlay. Blown rubber underlay is the traditional type (that you have had before) which is absolutly fine, but just not my cup of tea.

    Carpet wise - it's easy.....

    no it's not....

but can be summed up as

the denser(not thicker!) the better, choose 80/20 for better durability, but less stain resistancy, choose polypropylene for better stain resistancy/cleanability, but lower durability. Both are fine, but I used to sum it up as - kids/pets = polyprop no kids=80/20
Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%
  • Hey Lesley,

Pretty much what everyone says above ^^^^^^^^^

I don't like the cheap nasty rubber waffle stuff... it disintegrates, flatterns and leaves no comfort underfoot whatsoever. We had some of the rubber waffle stuff in our utility room for 2 years and it had crumbled so bad when we took up the carpet.

We bought Cloud 9 Cumulus and its just amazing!

    a) Will last forever!
    b) Gives your carpet that really nice soft feeling underfoot
    c) has good insulation and sound proofing properties
    d) easy to fit and lay - which makes the carpet fitters happy :j

We bought from Wilsons Underlay which was the cheapest at £2.31 per sq.metre - see the linky i attached for you above :money:

As i've said before, the wife loves it and it gets so many good comments from vistors... you can't go wrong:beer:
