New job and tax
Hi Not sure if I'm posting this in the right place, but feel free to move if so. I took redundancy from my old job and left at the end of Feb. I started my new job on 1st July. I've just been paid for the first time and paid no tax?! When I queried this with HR they said that as I hadn't worked yet this tax year I wouldn't…

Paying Tax on backdated Pension Income
Dear Forum Members, Does anyone know the answers to the following questions? I was widowed in October 2009 and due to the fact that I had lodged various complaints with the FSA against my late husband's private pension provider regarding their maladministration (complaints upheld), the pension payments due were not paid…

Charegable gains and personal allowance revisited - a nasty shock
Apologies to anyone likely to be offended by moaning by someone clearly about to received a large sum of money. But I'm assuming that MSE is an equal opportunity forum, so here goes... My father died late last year, aged 94. He had taken out non-qualifying polices 27 years earlier, placed in trust for my sister and myself…

Refund question please.
Hi folks My hubby was successful in making a claim for uniform tax, so had his new tax code last week where they reduced £60 from the yearly amount 2013-14.(standard rate). They are backdating from about 2010. Now yesterday he received P800 tax calculation 2012-13 to say he was due £74 from an overpayment for 2012-13,…

Freelancer - saving for tax
Hi all, After years of contract work I finally went properly freelance in April of this year. I'm still trying to establish myself so I haven't made masses of money. However as I start to get more work I am going to have to make sure I save enough for the tax-man to take his share. If there are any established freelancers…

Employer error?
Hi all, I've recently received a P800 saying I owe over £800 of underpaid tax. I moved jobs in July last year. I've checked through my payslips and P60 and spoken to my previous employers. It seems that they took tax from me correctly, and then failed to make me a leaver when I left in July. They didn't make me a leaver or…

Hi all, gone through many threads and am finding different responses to the issue I have. Basically I only get 34p a mile for using my car for work. Anonymous tax evasion reporting
Does anybody know how effective the tax evasion reporting form on the HMRC website actually is? Do they always look into it and do something about it or is it likely to get ignored? I know for a fact that a person I know does work under a business name cash in hand without paying tax (not registered as a business or…

New landlord-can I set up property management but still own flat personally?

Transferring Property income to wife to avoid 40%. Is this possible?
Hi All, I'm currently in the 40% tax bracket whilst my wife is well below it. We earn some income from property which we jointly own. Someone mentioned that I should be able to effectively allocate the full property investment income to her 100% rather than 50/50 as has been done in tax returns in the past. Does anyone…
