Can i claim self employment expenses even if i do not pay tax?

I have a self assessment to fill in and for the last tax year i earned around £5000 for the year whilst being a self employed independent contractor.

I did around 30 hours a week and all the work was over the internet.

I know i have an option to go for the £4 a week or i can do everything manually and claim a portion of the utility bills, council tax and computer purchase cost etc.

Will i only get this depending on how much i earned for the year?

Or does it depend on how many hours you do?

If you don't pay tax there is nothing to claim allowances against

If that £5K was your only income you don't pay tax

Shouldn't OP put it down for the record anyway. If earnings go up for any reason then there's a track record of being eligible for the expenses?

OP has zero tax liability this year because earnings are below the personal allowance, creating more expenses will not alter that fact

has OP registered as self employed? If not = problem

as each year is taken on its own then a "track record" is irrelevant

if on the other hand OP is trying to create an overall trading loss which he then plans to carry forward (or carry back) that is a whole different ball game
