in Cutting tax
Morning my friends I do hope someone can help
I have just had a letter from hmrc saying I owe over £1,100 in tax due to my second employer (part time job) not paying enough, so I assume they didn't put me on the correct tax code.
What can I do? I certainly cannot afford to pay it.
It says on the letter that they will start to take deductions from April next year.
Please help...:(

I won't be able to get back to you until tonight because I am in work... I would be grateful if you could get back to me later when I reply
Oh.. and thanks for your help.0 -
Check your codes on your payslips/P60s for the year concerned (assuming 12/13 but check). If both of them have something along the lines of 810L, then you've incorrectly had the tax free personal allowance to both jobs, giving rise to an underpayment.
In your case they would appear to have coded the underpayment out, meaning your allowances for 14/15 (i.e. from next April) will be restricted to allow you to pay additional tax each month to make up the shortfall, so effectively you pay in 12 installments rather than having to cough up a lump sum now.
Definitely check or have someone check the figures on the P800 to your employment records (P60s etc). Hope you get it sorted.0 -
When you started the second job, did you fill in a P46 and state that this was NOT your only job?
Unfortunately, the responsibility for checking that your tax codes are correct and that you are paying the right amount is ultimately yours.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

Yes I always fill in the P46 stating it was my second job and they know me personally aswell so they know that it was just my part time job.
I will reply with more detail later tonight and really do hope someone can help steer me in the right direction.
If I do have to pay it back could it be over a few years do u think? I have only just recently gone insolvent and this is really bad timing (not that there is ever a good time!)...0 -
I had a problem paying my tax bill on time last year so called them up & they were very helpful agreeing to me paying it in installments. Call them, explain what happend & your financial situation & arrange a repayment plan.I don't respond to stupid so that's why I am ignoring you.

If you do indeed owe it, it is likely they will change your tax code so you will pay it that way.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

If it is too much to collect over one year you can ask for it to be collected over up to 3 years depending on which year the underpayment arose. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

It is year 2012-2013...
The part time job was 944L (no longer with them)
The full time job is 816L
On the full time job it states:
* Total pay in that year £17261.02
* Total tax deducted £1809.20
I cannot find the P60 for the part time job although I am contacting their accountant tomorrow who should hopefully send me a copy in the post.
Having spoken to her earlier today she said the company were terrible at sending her over P45's and stuff like that...
What I do not understand is that it says on the P800...
Total income: £22,829 with tax paid: £1809.20
But.... I am sure I paid tax on the part time job, maybe not much but I am positive I did...
Where do I stand now guys?0 -

Ahhhh.
That would be the problem then. Your part time job should have been BR, so that every penny earned was taxed.
By my calcs, you earned £5568 from your PT job and 20% of that is £1100 or so.0
