I don't know if this is the right place to post this but I need some advice. I think someone that I know had access to my ni number. If this is all that they have of mine, should I be worried? I read on the web about identity fraud and benefits claims....

Collecting sales tax...and keeping it. How serious?
My wife and I make our living with a coffee truck and do the festival circuit. We have an artist friend who hits many of the same venues with her arts and crafts booth. Recently, she admitted to us that she has been collecting sales tax on her wares for over 20 years and...has simply kept the money. She's very…

How "friendly" are HMRC when it comes to settling tax-debts in installments
Ok, I have been really anxious over the last week. I did my tax return for 2010/2011 - I have only been properly self-employed for a short time so did some mis-calculations and will end up having to pay more tax and NIC 4 than expected. On top of that I was unable to make a great deal of pre-payments as my husband lost his…

Reading these threads has got me thinking ...... Just over 5 years ago, my wife had a part time job with company A. She then got a second additional job with company B and had a BR tax code on this job. She stopped working at company A a short while later, and company B became her only job. It later transpired that she…

20 years ago when we were all young(er) and stupid(er) someone I know did cash-in-hand work in nightclubs, signed on a bit and existed mostly on cash handouts from family which they banked. No tax was paid. This person then worked abroad for ages, this time all above-board. The family member died but after 7 years of the…

Can I claim back PAYE from the same year if my self employment runs at a loss?
I was recently told that if my self employment business ran a loss I was entitled to claim back PAYE from my part time job to cover the difference. Is this correct and if so how do I go about claiming it back? Any idea of the time-scale involved and are there any other implications I should watch out for? Thanks
