How to check correct tax paid ?

Reading these threads has got me thinking ......

Just over 5 years ago, my wife had a part time job with company A.

She then got a second additional job with company B and had a BR tax code on this job.

She stopped working at company A a short while later, and company B became her only job.

It later transpired that she continued to be taxed on the BR tax code at company B. I can't remember how this came to light, but (I think) she then rang HMRC to get her code changed.

She has recently left company B and is now self employed.

How can we check that the tax previously deducted was correct ?

She does not have copies of her old P60's etc. Would she need to request a copy from her previous employer, or would HMRC have these details ?

Many thanks for any help.

    When did she leave?

If it was after April then she would have recieved a P60 for the last tax year from both employers, if it has been lost a copy can be requested.

If she left before April then she would have a P45 with all the tax details plus a P60 from company B. You cannot get copies of P45's, if it missing then you lose it forever :p

Then just send a letter with copies of these to the Inland Revenue asking them to look into it, they should then check it out and send a refund for last year. To be honest you don't need the documents to send it but the more you help HMRC the quicker they will be!

Oh remember to include your national insurance number in your letters.

    Thanks for replying.

Yes, she has her most recent P60 and the P45.

The issue occurred about 4 or 5 years ago and may have continued for a couple of years before it was picked up and the tax code was corrected.

It is therefore the P60's from the previous years that are missing (and where the possible problem lies).

It may be that she overpaid tax for a period a few years ago, and am just thinking of the best / easiest way to go about this.

eg. I assume that HMRC have a copy of everybodys P60's for each year ? - can she just request a copy ?

(Sorry cannot post the link as a new poster, hopefully you see what I have done as a get around)

Just over halfway down the page has all the info you need, I would ring the past employer and ask if they can send you all the P60's from 2005. Then enloce a copy and send them to HMRC. Think they have to keep info for 6 years (might be wrong) so anything before that would be hard to claim if not impossible.

HMRC don't have the P60s - your employer has that information. You can request a copy from them but sometimes they won't provide one but will provide a Statement of Earnings for that period.

However if you are talking about a few years ago, HMRC will probably already have that information by now as at the end of each tax year the employer is required to send this info to HMRC - usually happens around June after the end of each tax year.

I would suggest that you phone HMRC in the first instance and see if they have the information already on file. They will soon tell you if they have not received an end of year return from the employer which will probably only be for the most recent tax year just ended.
