Is this IR35?
Hello If my husband takes a job for 6-12 months, setting himself up as a limited company, but working at the same place every day - is that IR35? if so, I can not see how any of similar contractors make any money out of self-employment. In his field, hourly rates can range from £12 to £26 hour. If you're paying IR35 tax,…

Liability order for council tax
Not sure if anyone can help on here or not but here goes. I have received a liability order for council tax for the year 2003 where the liability order was also obtained in 2003. As the council have not pursued this liability order until now what is the likelihood that the liability order has passed any statute of…

Should I take the option to be self-employed?
I am currently a full time employee for a company in Asia. I quit to move back to the UK, but my employer wants to keep me and they have offered to employ me remotely from the UK. They are flexible on how we do this, but we do not know legally what is possible. 1) Should I aim to be self employed in this situation or is…

Reclaiming VAT
Hi, I live in the Channel Islands. Some companies automatically take off the VAT when delivering goods to here. But now I want a smartphone, and the companies I have phoned won't take it off. How would I go about reclaiming the VAT once I buy the phone (or any other expensive goods)? Thanks for your help...

Hi, just read a similar thread and not sure how it all works. I have been self employed on a part time basis for a few years hiring out bouncy castles. I complete self assessment. When i purchase castles i claim a % against my income and when i have sold them in the past i write off the remaining balance and put the sale…

Transferring a property from my Mum to my sister and me!
My mum has a property that is let out and she's thinking of giving this to my sister and me now rather than leaving it in her will. What are the implications of this please? I know we'd be getting income from the rent which we'd have to pay tax on but it isn't much and I already have one rental property so I'm used to…

income over 10000
The HMRC say that if you earn more than £10,000 a year from income in savings you have to fill in a tax return, however it doesn't seem to be clear about the details. For example if this figure before or after tax is taken out. Also would it include interest earned in ISAs. Anybody know the answer? Thanks

HM Rev & Customs - Income Tax
Apologies to all if I'm using this forum incorrectly, total amateur on forums. Could do with some advice, if anyone could assist. HM Rev and Customs, PAYE Section, issued me with an incorrect Tax Code on the first of March this year. This code was then used to calculate my income tax for March. On the sixth of April…

Avoiding Tax by Moving Country?
A person owns a limited company. The company has £500k in the bank, and the owner gets a salary of £8k per year, into his own bank account. He obviously has to pay income tax etc on his £8k per year, and anything he takes out from the business. After a while, the owner/employee decides to move to the middle-east and run…

Claiming tax deductions for travelling to Uni to train for job
I am currently attending University to get my Degree in Quantity Surveying as part of my training at work. The Uni is a 130 mile round trip, does anyone know if I would be able to claim this as tax deductable and it is technically travelling for work and not my usual workplace. Also could things like books and stationary…

Tax underpayment notification
I received a rather unwanted letter from HMRC stating that I owe them £1624 in backdated taxes for 2010/2011. Apparently the figures sent in on my P11D by my employer (for company car and fuel) had not been transposed into the correct tax code. I've checked all backdated P11D forms to 2007 and they are all correct so I…

P11d form - is this a legal requirement for a Director of a Ltd Co?
Not sure if this is the right place to ask this question but maybe someone will know. I am going to open a Ltd Company soon and I will be sole Director. Is it now a legal requirement that I submit a P11d (or rather that my company submits it on my behalf as Director)? I am getting confusing answers from different…

Self Assessment: HMRC guide contradictions
Hi - I'm trying to calculate my expenses for my self-assessment. If I work from home, using 1/5 of my flat for 8 hours a day, what proportion of fixed and variable costs can I put down as expenses? The HMRC guide (BIM47825) seems to contradict itself: In example 4, Chris claims works 4 hours a day so claims for 4/24 of the…

Should have signed off self-employed 3 years ago!
This is a little complicated, I'm just not sure where to start! I hope someone here can give me a place to begin.... Anyone who's seen any of my other threads has probably guessed that my partner is a financial mess. He's better now than he was but sometimes his attitude to problems is 'I don't care, let it sort itself'…

Tax on Overtime with Part time work
Hi there. I am 20 years old and recently managed to get off JSA and netted myself a part time job paying £7.50 an hr and 12.5 hours a week, tax free. I get my wages at the end of each month. However, this month, I've been covering some people and done an extra 93.5 hours. So, my query is thus. Just how much of this am I…

Can I discontinue with self=assessment form?
For the last few years, we have been living off interest on our savings. We were more comfortable claiming the tax back every year through self-assessment form on-line, as before that period we had a couple of properties rented out. However I have, since July, been receiving my company pension, this is taxed at source with…
