My dad has just sent me a cheque, but it has the words "banker's draft" at the bottom - does this mean when I pay it into my bank it will clear instantly - as if I'd paid cash in?

I receive regular cheques in american dollars. I pay them into my UK account but every transaction carries a £10 handling charge, and the exchange rate seems a bit poor.
