After the wonderful success of last months challenge I thought I would do another for March to motivate people to get rid of the unwanted, the unneeded, the bought "as a bargain" but never used, the out of style, the surplus to requirements, the tat, the clutter, the stuff you want gone.

I am changing it slightly this month to include an emphasis on just thinning out our unwanted stuff. Yes, we are all here to make ourselves as financially buoyant as possible and making extra cash, but never underestimate the incredible benefit of just getting rid of things that gather dust to help you feel less physically and often mentally cluttered and the lovely gooey feeling of giving things away to people who are in need, hopefully a combination of some money and feeling good, getting richer AND feeling gooey? Incredible!

Stage One - Attempt to sell it.
Look into listing it on Ebay, gumtree and local Facebook selling groups. There is a great post here that lists a lot of alternative sites that are worth considering too. Be warned that Ebay usually restricts you to 20 free listings a month, with the occasional 100 free listing weekends. This are unadvertised, random and erratic. My tip is to use your 20 listings and save the next batch in your drafts to ping out and go live if you so happen to get an invite to such an event. If you're not too fussed a listing is around 35p after your free 20 have run out.

Of course if your partner / family / friend is happy to sell on your behalf then that's pretty kind of them too

Gumtree and Facebook groups are free you could sell in national groups or local ones, just bear in mind you won't get as much support if something goes wrong, but don't let that put you off, the majority of people do very well and have no issues!

Be creative!! Have a good womble around your house, your loft, garage even your garden! Maybe a strategy would help? Attack one area at a time and smash through it till you are satisfied. Will you really use those old bricks in the back of the garden? Do you really want to keep baby clothes in the loft from 1996? Be honest, be strict, be ruthless. Kon Mari says unless an item brings you joy (or is immensely needed) then just get rid of it. Plus its more cash for us!

Stage Two - If it doesn't sell
Time to decide if you want to relist it, scrap it or donate it. Be brave! Also give a thought if you can repurpose the item for anything else by doing it up, breaking it down, using skills and crafts. Crazy daft ideas are all over the internet, heres a hundred that might inspire you although the are quite silly

If you do decide you don't want to relist consider passing it on to someone else who might get lots of joy from it. Sites like Freecycle or again Gumtree or Facebook "free stuff" groups. Remember to be savvy about your safety. Smaller items are perfect for charity shops, however many have restrictions on certain items like small electricals so if in doubt check first.

And finally, if its really no good, you can't imagine anyone else will want and you have tried to give it away and no is interested then take it your local recycling or refuse centre.

So what's the goal again? Declutter, by selling, donating or skipping!!

  • 31 things in March
  • Everyone is welcome
  • You can jump in any time you like to just get involved, no need to ask
  • Sell one a day, in blocks, at weekends whatever works for you
  • Decluttering is as important as the money
  • Set yourself as many goals as you wish to keep yourself motivated
  • Got a tip? Share it!
  • Positivity, support and the use of amusing gifs and memes is highly welcome

If would be really nice if you would share your personal goal, any rules you might set and how you will use those lovely funds at the end of the month. Feel free to brag!!

p.s If you already have stuff listed thats cool, jump in at any time, everyone is welcome. This challenge is for fun, motivation and a place for you to brag about selling things that you cant really talk about to your friends even though you are super excited about making money and they look at you a bit weird like you must be some kind of hoarder those judger's.

I am I for this. Not done as well as I had hoped with Ebay sales in Feb, but I know I have loads of things that can be donated.
My plan is to clear at least the centre of the loft!! Also, if we have a nice day will clear the shed and get it tidy for the Spring.

I think I'll join in too. Got loads of things that need to go in the bin, never mind the things I want to sell but not got round to
    Total Debt - £30,814.90 at 12/2/2016

  • I think the garden is going to be a big thing for me for March too, going to get savvy with the wheelie bins and get things in those every Wednesday night and seeing what on earth is in the back of the outhouse.... its up to the rafters with what I am sure is rubbish. Its very frustrating living with a hoarder!

I am wondering if a local church playgroup would want some of the old outside toys too, might do a reccy next Saturday while its light and see what in good enough condition to clean and donate to them.

BUT - I have a load of stuff I want to sell too! I just found a Victorias Secret water bottle I bought because nothing fit my huge butt in the store and I wanted to buy something, anything so I could have something nice. Plus books! Ugh! I am thinking 30 day listings for those that are popular and charity shop for the rest as don't tend to do too well.

What a brilliant idea! I have got the ball rolling today by listing 3 items on ebay :)
  • I'm up for this. I keep promising myself I'll get round to listing things on ebay and never do. I've got the day free tomorrow and 100 free listings, so I don't have any excuse not to give this a go.

Good for you KCC :) you sound even more articulate this month. You've definitely up to date with all the tips. I really want to join but I think I've Marie Kon'd the flat already. Took 7 months but don't think there's anything left to go. I feel amazing about it! Good luck everyone :)

  • Room for one more?
I've been drowning in a house full of stuff for ages now and really need the push to clear out. Ideally I'd like to make some money from it but happy to give away if selling doesn't work.

This challenge sounds like just what I need so I will be joining.

I have made a couple of hundred pounds selling books on webuybooks.co.uk, but they do need to be in very good condition and there are obviously lots of stuff they don't accept. Might be worth looking though.
