I've been Money Tipped!
My daughter is training to be a midwife. She has attended 3 births but on Friday night, she had the first birth in which the baby was delivered 'into her hands' as it were ie not watching or assisting but taking the lead role.

The birth went well and the the baby's parents were thrilled to be her "first proper delivery", insisting on photographs being taken etc.

Home went my daughter to bed (it had been a night shift) and on waking later in the day, her husband mentioned that his mother had called to say that there was a new baby in the family, born to his cousin who had recently returned to live "somewhere down south".

You've guessed it...my daughter had unknowingly delivered her own children's second cousin and neither side realised at the time that they were related :D

If this thread doesn't belong in the Marriage, Relationships and Families section, then I don't know what does!

Any other uncanny or staggering coincidence stories out there?

Thank you for taking the time to tell it....
I can't think of any other uncanny or staggering coincidence at the moment but I will have a think while I peel the vegies for dinner.

That's lovely although am I the only one surprised that neither of them realised the relationship. Wonder if the mother would have wanted a relative to deliver the baby if she had known.
Lost my soulmate so life is empty.

I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

The background explains why neither knew the other.

My daughter's father in law can be somewhat grumpy and he and his sister (the grandmother of the new baby) have little to do with one another apart from occasional, can't-be-avoided weddings, funerals etc.

Secondly, because the baby's mother is from the female side of the family, both she and her mother changed their names upon marriage so that there was no inkling that Midwife Smith was tending Mrs Black, the daughter of Mrs White, whose maiden name had been Smith, IYSWIM!

Having had three children myself, I can hand on heart swear that in the throes of labour, I didn't care who was there!

A lovely story, I am part of a huge family and I know quite a lot of second cousins these days but my brother and sister went to school with children we now know to be second cousins at the time we had no idea, The internet has really helped to reconnect us.

During my first term at upper school I befriended another girl with the same name as me. At that time the children were required to attend their first parents evening at that school so when the evening came, I introduced my new friend who was present with her parents to my Mum and Dad.

I was gobsmacked to find that the parents already knew each other. It turned out that they used to be next door neighbours. The other family moved away overseas with the Dad's job when my friend was only a few months old. My parents had then moved away as well to another village when I was four which is where I grew up. The other family had returned to the area after several years away and lo and behold we ended up in the same class at the same school and became friends. Small world!

Wow, what a coincidence! And a great story.

Here in Southern Ireland, it's like a village. Everyone knows everyone far and wide, as the migration to the cities from the country is huge.

I was on holidays in Egypt and I met a friend from my home town. Now I am glad I was on my best behaviour at the time!

We always say here when the gals are having a !!!!!y rant in our favourite restaurant..."are we safe to talk..have a look around first before we discuss X" lol.

    You just never know.

That is lovely! and I am sure it will add an extra special memory for the both of them :)

Mine was when I went to a football match, it was about 5 mins to kick off and two seats next to me were still empty in an otherwise packed stadium. Two people came in and we all stood up so they could sit down. It was the boy I used to live on the same road as and babysat, and his dad! Maybe that doesn't sound such a long shot if it was a local team, but this stadium was over a two hour drive away from our homes, had 30,000 seats (ok so a chunk of them would have been season ticket holders) but still!! We spent most of the match saying "no waaaaaay!"

Another one with my mum, she grew up in a village, her friend moved to America, my mum moved into a different town. Her friend (who she had lost contact with - no Internet, mobiles etc back then!) moved back to the UK and moved in and married a man on the same street as my mum and they live opposite each other again! Very weird for them bumping into each other again after all those years!
