Wee Wee Leaks !!!

Options
Hello all

Just wondered if anyone can give me some advice. My boy is nearly 3 and has mastered the potty training in the day. The night time challenge is still to come and master.

The problem we are seeing that he is peeing in the night and its leaking out from the sides of the nappy and obviously his nightwear and bed are wet - we give him a bath in the morning and this causes tantrums !!! (plus all the washing)

we are using the biggest nappies (6+) and also another pull up on top of that

Any advice on how to beat this?

He will become dry in his own time. In the meantime, do you lift him last thing at night before you go to bed - most kids don't really wake up if you take them to the loo then. Try a different brand of nappy - it shouldn't be leaking.
Don't restrict fluids drastically, but cut down towards bedtime. Does he still have a bottle or cup when he goes to bed? He shouldn't need that by age 3.

Lifting isn't recommended anymore. The OP isn't trying to get him dry anyway.

OP, is there too much wee for the nappies or are they just leaking? They may not be snug enough.

    Not recommended by whom?

Sod that, so it takes junior a little longer to become dry at night, what's that balanced against having a soggy, upset toddler and to strip beds and remake every night and wash quilts, sheets and pyjamas every day. Too much parenting by the manual these days!

Hope you've got a plastic sheet on the mattress OP

That's a lot of wee for a 3 year old! Whilst lifting isn't advised any more, stopping drinks an hour before bedtime is. As is a "double-wee" when they go to bed. So let him have one when he's doing his final preparations for bed, like teeth cleaning, then get him to trot off for a last one after his story when he's just about to lie down and go to sleep. Even if it's only 5 minutes later, there's usually a few ml of wee left. And no drinks by the bed etc - he shouldn't need them.

If it's just your DS's shape, or his level of tossing and turning over night which is causing his nappy to let him down, you could try bedmats such as the pampers ones (I believe there are some puppy-training ones which are similar but much cheaper:D). Keeping a star chart for when he does the big first morning wee in the loo or potty may be an idea too: One of my foster children used to lie in bed awake and wet her pyjama pants in the morning as it felt nice and warm:eek: - a star chart helped with that one!

Make sure he is actually drinking enough. Concentrated urine irritates the bladder, also not allowing the bladder to learn but insisting he goes 'just in case' can also be counter productive.
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

+1 for checking the nappy really fits.
Wholehearted sympathies with the unwanted addition to your morning routine but surviving it is possible.
He'll master "being a big boy" on his time, so up *your* restorative fluid intake in the interim!

Squeak (3) is still in 4+ nappies at night and bedding is dry!

Definitely try a smaller nappy, if I put her in 6+ it would be everywhere :o

Does he wee all the time in the daytime? or seem to be very thirsty?

Are you using a nappy and a pull up, or two pull ups? IME nappies hold a lot more wee than pull ups do, as the pull ups are really designed for toilet training.

As others have said check you are using the right size nappy. If you are, and he is really in 6+, then he would probably also fit in pyjama pants which are designed for older kids who still wet at night and probably hold more wee.

Otherwise, some ideas to try are to try different brands of nappies to see whether they fit better, or to get some disposable booster pads and put them in the nappy (they are designed to be used with real nappies but no reason why you can't use them with a disposable) and try putting a waterproof wrap over the nappy (again designed for use with real nappies. motherease ones tend to be good for a range of sizes and shapes though)

I had the same problem with my daughter - I bought some of the old fashioned waterproof pants (for use with terry nappies) and put one of them on overnight which solved the problem. HTH.
