Tattoo's, Piercings and Employment

Hi all!

I was just wondering what individuals opinions were of facial piercings / visable tattoos on employees?

From both the employer and customer point of view if possible.

Would you shop / visit elsewhere if the person trying to sell you something had for example, cheek piercings?

Would you distrust someone with piercings / tattoos?

What if they had a large non-offensive chest tattoo that you could see?

My partner has a piercing at the top of his nose, inbetween his eyes, and is covered in tattoos (albeit, non from the neck upwards and non on hands). He works in a non-customer facing role. Previously he worked in a customer facing role and took the facial piercings out so as to not cause any 'offence'....

I've got several facial piercings and no tattoos as of yet. I've had mine for so long, I can take them out for work and pop them back in when I get home and they don't heal. BUT, I would like to venture more into cheek piercings and some tattoos across my own chest. My bosses are pretty relaxed about it, but obviously, things change. I wouldn't want to lose future opportunites just because of a tattoo or a piece of metal. But in reality, would I? No employer would admit to not hiring someone because of a tattoo they had (assuming it wasn't offensive), but we all know it happens.

Because I am relatively 'alternative', if anything, I would probably warm to someone with tattoos and piercings quicker than I would if they didn't, as we would have a likeness of something in common from the offset.

But I am young and wonder if actual employers would be discouraged by non-offensive body art.

Opinions please!

Like it or not, people make judgments based on appearances... I expect a doctor to look a certain way, a banker another and a rugby player different again.

I personally do not like tattoos and piercings as I see them as disfigurements... but that is my opinion. Does my opinion cloud my view of strangers with said tattoos or piercings? If I'm honest, possibly...

So, you have to ask yourself why you feel you want to 'customise' the way you look as it is something you will have to live with forever... we are all different and some will view you differently with piercings / tattoos - that is human nature... but if you are content with wanting to change you looks then just be aware that it *may* change the way others see you.

Certain jobs require a certain "look" so to speak. I would depend on what kind of employment.
  • But for instance....

I'm never going to be a doctor, lawyer, etc and will be generally non-customer facing for my 'planned' career path. Although I am aware things may change, so do try to keep an open mind.

If you were an employer taking someone on in a non-customer facing role, would you care if they had visable tattoo's and piercings?

Some will, some won't. If you do it just be prepared that your chances of getting jobs do become lower.

I personally am a bit revolted by facial piercings. I accept that is my personal almost phobia, but they do make me feel quite queasy when I see them (as do long dreadlocks) and I would find someone heavily tattooed to be quite threatening. So given choice of good candidates, if I were employing someone I would probably not choose the person who made me feel personally uncomfortable
  • Could people also say what piercings / tattoos they have, if any? It may give a better view on the subject :)

All opinions are being read and appriciated! :)

Studies show that people make their mind up about a person's appearance in the first 20 seconds of meeting them.

Everyone is a product of their own upbringing and past experiences... if they have been brought up around people with tattoos / piercings then they will not be as shocked or phased as those who are less familiar with them.

Certain things suggest a sub-culture lifestyle that some people may judge compared to their own lifestyle... that is a fact... humans are tribal and judgemental.

We can't tell you whether anyone will offer / not offer a job as a result of your appearance BUT they will make a judgement based on your appearance as numerous studies show... people judge people by looks first when meeting them.

I personally as a customer have nothing against it, however there's a growing trend amongst employers to be very against it! With that being said I do find it somewhat odd that HMV have been in the news a couple of months back for refusing employment to people based on appearance (no visible tattoos or long hair for example) - a place where you figure it would be a little more "liberal".

If I were to get a tattoo though it would strictly be one which could be covered up, the chances are most employers WILL have a slightly negative opinion & older customers may be put off as well.

Then consider very carefully if you really wish to proceed.

Employers tend to be conservative, bear this in mind.

When I went to collect a parcel from the Post Office depot the guy serving had tattoos as far as the eye could see (!!) including facial tattoos, and he also had a LOT of piercings. So I'm guessing the Royal Mail might be a safe bet :rotfl:

It might also depend on the area you're working in, though. I suppose the city near me is known for being a bit liberal and free-thinking and people as a general rule aren't going to be fazed by the sight of a few tattoos. Somewhere like Tunbridge Wells might be a bit different though.. :undecided

A lot of people unfortunately can be very judgemental and will see someone with brightly coloured hair/tattoos/piercings as a no-hoper!
