Main Stream insurers as we know charge loads eg 18 year old corsa 1.0 £2400 etc etc

But if you get a car over 20 years old and buy a special 'classic policy' you can insure it with a specialist for a fraction of the cost. For example my 18 year old fried. Skoda Felicia 1.3 petrol 1999 t plate £2300!!!!!!! (main stream insurer direct line)

Cheap quote 21 year old (car)1.3 petrol golf £465!!!!! (same 18 year old driver)- footman james insurance Tel 0843 3571908

Good things
You can get an agreed value as anything over 20 years old is classed as a classic
Super cheap
Even for fully comp

Bad things
You probably won't incur no claims bonus, but if you tell the next insurer you been claim free for a year they'll give you discount anyway, especially if u stick with same insurer.

Tip : join an owners club and it's even cheaper, eg British vw clubs for any vws etc.

If you try this please post how u got on.

Search for cars over 20 years on bay by searching for the year only under the car section eg 1988 , 19
86 etc, also specify year only in auto trader search

Good luck

Jeff

P.s never insurer in your mum or dads name with you as main user, if insurer catches you they will cancel the policy or any claim you make!!it's v easy for them to find out these days. This is called 'fronting'

That's not fronting (you have declared the young driver as the main driver)

If this worked every young driver would do it. I wonder why they don't?

Some smallprint from Footman James to assist:

    The vehicle:
    • Is over 15yrs of age (Quotes available for younger vehicles please ring the number below for a quotation).
    • Has not been modified from the manufacturer's standard specification.
    • Is not a grey or parallel import including US imports.
    • Is not valued at more than £50,000.
    • Is not a Van, pickup, motor home or other commercial vehicle.
    • Must be garaged at night.
    • Your maximum annual mileage will not exceed 6000 mpa (please ring us for higher options that may be available)
No more than four named drivers to be included on policy
No-one who will drive the vehicle on this insurance:
    • Is under 25 years of age.
    • Has a notifiable condition that has not been notified to DVLA.
    • Has a conviction for non-motoring offences that has not been rehabilitated under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.
    • Has been refused insurance or had special terms imposed.
    • Holds a provisional or non UK driving licence.
    • Holds a full UK licence less than 5 years.

So you need to be over 25 - oops!
    You need a garage
You may be restricted to about 120 miles a week.

You're quoting the on-line quote requirements, and missing off the part that says phone if you don't meet them.

Call them and see . I've worked in the insurance industry for ten years, and have had these types of policies for 12 years. My friend Stefan is 18 and had a beetle with footman James but just switched to a 21 year old golf. Call and see or don't bother. Fronting is where the mum or dad is the first named policyholder but the son or daughter is the named user- which is what I meant.

They don't do it daveyjp because it's not a very well known fact!!!!

The other issue being that I would not want my 18yr old son driving a 20 year old car (this is a good few years off fortunately). When he's driving like an idiot, as all 18yr old lads will do at some point, I want his car to have crumple zones, passenger cells, air bags and ABS. I've seen some footage of crash tests of original mini's hitting modern cars and the outcome is mind boggling.

I've got nothing against old cars - mine is 12 years old, but when I'm picking a car for my son in 15 yr's time safety will be high on the list of priorities.

    It's an interesting concept.
Insurance is increasing, as alledgedly kids are having more accidents.
If they are getting cars so they know they can have a "safer" accident, does that encourage the moments of driving like an idiot, as they know the car will take care of them?
I know when I started driving, if you pushed it, you span off the road backwards, and it hurt.

I actually don't think how safe the car is would influence their driving standards. At 18 lots of people think they're indestructable and don't consider the consequences of their actions. I know I did'nt and I drove quite a variety of cars at that age - Mk2 Escort, Bedford Rascal van, and Vauxhall Astra with airbags & ABS. I know my driving standards did'nt change between the cars. Obviously as you get a bit older experience and wisdom start to temper reckless behaviour. I'm certainly aware that my current car does not have many safety aids and drive accordingly.

I guess the other side to your comment is that there are lots of other terrible drivers on the road driving around in their 4x4's and battle tanks who feel totally safe and put the 18yr olds driving their highly crushable 20yr old cars at risk.

I don't think there's an easy answer to this and I do agree with you that some people may temper their driving standards in an older car, I just think the majority of 18yr olds won't.

I thought that too obtain a classic car insurance policy you also had to have a main car with a normal insurance policy, or have things changed?

I thought a classic policy cannot be used for work or business purposes either. I am not sure if commuting is even allowed on a classic policy.
