voice actions for android

many of you might already be using 'voice search' for voice activated search and navigation and typing. There is a new update that lets you do a lot more. manyof you like me might have downloaded the app from elsewhere on the net and wont get the update from the market.

to be able to download the new apps you need to uninstall the old versions and download the new versions from the market and probably best to choose the automatic update option for these system apps.

google seems to be initiating the updates for system apps from the market instead of over the air updates for system software as that takes the 'networks / carriers' out of the loop as they wont be able to install bloatware with their own branding instead. most system updates are due for release via the market probably from android 3.0 (gingerbread) onwards anyway.

" lets you perform lots of other actions with your phone too including:
  • listen to music title/artist/album
  • note to self note
  • send text to recipient
  • send email to recipient
  • call recipient
  • navigate to location
  • directions to location
  • map of location
  • go to website URL"
i had been using the voice search for searches and navigation and didnt know about some of the other features. hope this is useful for some other android users too.

how to instal power control widget http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovP6Zg_pUkI

how to use power control widget http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqlU1_yWcyM but i would NOT recommend using the advanced task killer promoted on this video as a last tip. google themselves discourage using task killers on android.

this power control widget is available as a system option on all android phones

edit: another useful widget is the 'mobile network widget' and 'airplane mode widget' see how to get these widgets on your phone (preinstalled on android phones) see towards the end of this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oJh4xGMdSQ&NR=1

i keep seeing many android newbies asking the same questions repeatedly so thought putting some links to videos here might help newbies find useful things for their android phones at one go.

hope others put some useful links here so that other users like me learn more about how to use our phones in more useful ways.

ps: everyone interested in gaming, try out the free demo of 'winds of steel' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Qb-0Xcjlgs available on the android market for some interesting dog fights in combat aircraft. nice way to kill time if like me you get stuck waiting at your dentist or gp surgery or car repair shop or airport killing time. other ways to kill time with 3d games http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZcMuetCUtw&NR=1&feature=fvwp

Just a quick question. I have version 1.6.0 of the voice search. I was going to uninstall this version as you suggested and get the new one, but the uninstall button is not highlighted so I can't.

    What can you suggest?

Try going to settings, applications, then select voice search, that should give you the option to uninstall.

Thanks, I had tried this. Unfortunately the uninstall button is greyed out so I can't select it.

go to home screen > settings > manage applications > all applications > then select the voice search and then uninstall from there. or use uninstaller app from the market. but going from the settings worked fine for me.

vlingo used to have a 'discounted' price of £10 till very recently and has been a highly rated app but after google recently launched voice actyions for android and decimated vlingos game plan, now vlingo is available for free on the android market. this app had very good reviews. so anyone interested download it from the market for free now.

    see details about vlingo http://androidandme.com/2010/06/applications/vlingo-for-android-gives-users-full-voice-control-over-their-android-phone-giveaway/

on other platforms like blackberry RIM it is still costing money and only lite version is free as far as i know.

Today i learnt a new way of cramming 4 widgets into the place of one widget while still not losing the htc sense features.

Earlier i could do this using seprate launchers like launcher pro or adw launcher (see various launchers on this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtF79j7PbM8&NR=1 ) etc but then i lost htc sense on those extra screens if i used those launchers so i had uninstalled them as i didnt like losing the shortcut to recent used apps by long pressing the home button. using adw launcher etc i lost this long press home button option for recent used apps, as that instead brought up the switching feature between htc sense and the alternative launchers.

Recently came across the 'Multicon' widget app which is free from the android market http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.h9kdroid.multicon . this app / widget allows one to cram 4 widgets into the space of one widget with the stock htc sense launcher undisturbed, so instead of having 16 widgets per page one can have 64 widgets per page if one wants to do so! So now on my main home screen i have the stock htc sense clock+weather widget bar (occupies 2 rows) , plus the power control widget bar (occupies one row) and on the last row (using the Multicon widget app) i have installed 16 widgets in one row which usually allows only 4 widgets. just thought i would mention the new app that i found interesting incase some one else wants such features for cramming more widgets/apps on their home screen.

who ever is interested in having more widgets than allowed by htc sense, try out the alternative launchers (adw launcher or launcher pro) but i prefer the 'Multicon' app instead as it does similar things on the htc sense launcher itself. one can get all the stock android apps on the crammed widgets except for the htc sense apps/widgets (like htc sense clock+weather widget / htc music widget / htc profile widget etc)
