Today out of the blue I received a letter from 1st Credit saying they are going to recover an outstanding debt they now have between myself and a company called CashEuroNet Uk which I have never heard of.I do not have any outstanding debts.

What should I do next

  • Ignore them. They could be fishing. They may have a debt with someone who has a similar name that they are trying to trace and are sending out letters in the hope someone will call them.

If you are sure it is not your debt then do not contact them as they will only bully you into paying.
Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free :)
    Mortgage free since 2014 :)
  • I had one of these. You will find other posts on this company's seriously underhand attitude to debt collection. Fortunately I have access to professional advice on this so if they don't go away;

Ask for a copy of the credit agreement. They must give you this under the consumer credit act and are not entitled to charge any fee. If they bluster about the DPA fee tell them that if they do not give you a copy as required under the CCA then you will report them to the FSA.

They cannot take you to court unless you have been given a copy of this and they have proof that they have delivered both default and termination notices to you. A court will readily strike out any action against you without this as part of their case.

Under no circumstances tell them your date of birth. They could use this to falsify records that are otherwise patently false.
  • I have just had 'the letter' too. No idea who these people are or whether to reply or not. Just for the record, I've never had finance on anything except the mortgage on my house, which is all in order. I don't even have a credit card, just a debit card.

Should I reply or not ?

Here's what the letter says in full...

Re Your agreement with CashEuroNet UK
    Relating to Account Number xxxxxxxx
    Balance Outstanding £612

We write to introduce 1st Credit Ltd to you

CashEuroNet UK, has assigned to 1st Credit Finance Ltd the full outstanding balance due under the agreement referred to above. As a result of this assignment, the full amount outstanding is due o 1st Credit Finance Ltd immediately.

As the outstanding balance is owed to 1st Credit Finance Ltd you should not make nay paymentds to CashEuroNet UK, as it will take significantly longer to process the payment onto your account. To discharge your outstanding balance, you now need to make payment direct to the appointed servicing agent 1st Credit Finance Ltd at the above address.

We ask you to contact this office immediately so we can agree payment terms with you. Failure on your part to do this will result in more formal recovery proceedings being taken against you.

In accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 we will comply with any request for a copy of the Personal Information about you that is held on our computer system.

Send your request, along with the administration fee of £10.00 and a self addressed envelope to the above address.

Please contact us on 0870 164 2042 your reference is xxxxxx

PLEASE DO NOT IGNORE THIS LETTER

We look forward to hearing from you.

You should be aware that 1st credit are under scrutiny by the OFT:

    http://www.oft.gov.uk/news/press/2009/20-09

There is clearly something fishy going on here. And this appears not to be an isolated incident.

The OFT has said that they should 'ensure that all matters of concern raised with them by the free advice sector and other third parties are dealt with appropriately.' I think you should contact one of the respected free advice agencies like CAB, CCCS or National Debtline.

Just thinking...1st credit got a mention on Watchdog last week...
  • Yes, they did.
Any help, opinions, views I may hold those are my own. Respect them as you would expect the same in return. Offered freely, is gleaned from a lifetime of experiences, knowledge gaining. Passed on to benefit others. I may be direct, ask you questions but those are to help you. Up to you if you choose to take it. I won't judge you either way.

There's a chopped-down version of the watchdog report here:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/watchdog/consumer_advice/latest_debt_interview_emp.shtml

Unfortunately, the bit where the minister names 1st credit is no longer in the clip

    Close, merlin!

I had to google both Father Unwin and Joe 90 to remember who my avatar is!

    Answer: Mac, Joe90's Dad.

I wanted Joe90 but the pics I found didn't show him wearing glasses like I remembered.

We're now taking this thread waaaaay off track!
