This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...
I bought a second-hand car and got the dealer to knock £200 off. After two days, I realised it had a major fault which he agreed to fix for £200. Should I pay him?

Unfortunately the MSE team can't always answer money moral dilemma questions as contributions are often emailed in or suggested in person. They are intended to be enjoyed as a point of debate and discussed at face value.

  • Dealer should fix it for free if the buyer has only had it for 2 days.

Sounds like the dealer wants the original sale price in exchange for basic rights. Unfortunately that's not how it works.

But then as always knowing how much the car was and what the fault is may affect any advice given.

There isn't really a moral implication here. It's a legal one.

The fact of the matter is that all dealers inflate the price so they have some wiggle room to 'do a deal'.

Obviously you should because for it to be agreed by him you wouldbe the other party to the agreement (Is this an english comprehension test?). The time to dispute payment would be before agreeing.

    +1

"Agreed" means agreed to the terms (i.e. pay £200 for fix).

"offered to repair for £200" would be completely different, and payment should not be required for a pre-existing undeclared major fault, or the car could be returned.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

These Moneysaving Moral Dilemmas are frankly crass.

Clearly designed to generate forum responses to scenarios that are made up.
  • If you are buying anything (specially a second hand car) the phrase to remember is Caveat Emptor (Buyer Beware) and you should make your own enquiries and/or assessment of the condition of the vehicle and this could/should include an independent examination. You should also ask the seller directly if there are any known faults and the seller should reply honestly. If they don't then they have misled you into that purchase. Any *reputable dealer* would apply some sort of warranty to the vehicle (at least three months). If there was no warranty and the fault developed after only two days and could not reasonably have been known by the seller (these things can happen) then you should probably pay for the repair because you weren't careful enough about making your purchase and from whom you bought it.

Fortunately for the consumer none of this is actually true. The law is quite the opposite.
