Money Moral Dilemma: Should I ask guests to keep their energy use down?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...
A lot friends come and stay at my house and I'm happy to have them as guests. But some of them turn their bedroom into a recharging centre, plugging in up to ten devices at once. This impacts on my electricity bill - would it be mean of me to ask them to be a little more modest in their use?

Unfortunately the MSE team can't always answer money moral dilemma questions as contributions are often emailed in or suggested in person. They are intended to be enjoyed as a point of debate and discussed at face value.

I think it depends upon, how good a friend are they ?
Could you ask without it becoming a big issue, and how long are they staying ? If they're not going to be with you for long, i'd just bite my lip. If they're with you for a long time, i may say something about a contribution towards your outlay of them being there.

If its just chargers for portable devices ,then the amount of leccy consumed is negligible -I would only worry if a relation who was staying plugged in a couple of fan heaters!!!

Recharging even 10 devices will use less than leaving a 'normal' light on in the room.
  • Who brings 10 devices when they stay?
I'm trying to think what they might have!...

    1) Personal mobile
    2) Work mobile
    3) Laptop
    4) iPad
    5) Smart Watch
    6) MP3 player
    7) um... kettle?

Electronic cigarettes, vibrator, electric razor, electric toothbrush, the list goes on and on.

Yes it would be mean to mention it because the cost of recharging is negligible and they will be aware of that.
  • It would be incredibly mean to raise this issue. Would you begrudge your friends a second cup of coffee with their breakfast? I ask as the cost is probably similar to recharging their gadgets overnight.

If it is such a big deal to you then don't invite them to stay in the first place.

These devices use next to nothing, so you should create an entirely false impression of generosity by encouraging them to plug as many of these devices as possible.

Why not fit new combined 13 amp and USB sockets for their use?

Suck it up and be a good host, as it's likely they'll reciprocate and host you at a later date
  • Lets assume each charger uses 10W (thats a lot for a charger!), and they are left charging for 12 hours a day. Thats 0.12KWh per day, per charger, so 10 devices would be 1.2KWh per day.
    Over a week, thats 8.4KWh.
At 15p/Kwh, thats a grand total of £1.26

Are you really going to cause a fuss over a few pence?

As other posters have said, the amount of energy used is negligible. Charging 10 devices overnight may add a couple of pennies on to your electricity bill but nothing more. Boiling the kettle once will use far more electricity than all of their devices would in a night so I wouldn't worry about it. Unless your name is Ebeneezer.
