Money Moral Dilemma: Should I share winnings from my secret lottery tickets?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...
I'm part of a lottery pool of five, and am the one who's responsible for going and buying the tickets each week. We all put forward a set of numbers, but if I were to put them all on twice, paying for the second lot of tickets on my own, would it be wrong of me to keep half if we win the jackpot?

I don't know about wrong, but it would certainly be weird!

If you paid for it out of your own money, using the same numbers i dont think you should have to share it. I mean anyone has the free will to do that, as well as doing the lottery pool. I see it more as doubling your chances. If you did win, they;d still get their share, you'd just get a bit extra. Although i guess technically theyd get less of the jackpot as hypothetically it would be split between your ticket and the group ticket.... hmmm....nah sod it i'd buy the extra ticket and keep it.
But then i'm utterly skint and although people say money doesnt buy happiness i;d be a lot happier with no money problems! So i may be biasedThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Silly question really IMV. Anyone anywhere could have chosen the same numbers as your syndicate including you. Just means that the jackpot is halved. If only two jackpot winners that is.
No problem imv. As long as your ticket is a totally separate one, and the syndicate win is shared out properly.0 -
Putting money on outside of the lottory pool and using the same numbers is upto you, but remember you've used the numbers what others have provided.
I personally would split the money, because if was the other way round I would be p***ed if someone did that to me.It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun0 -

Why? Who would know?
There are odds on many others apart from the questioner using the same numbers too don't forget.
It's a lottery out there!! I don't see the problem really.0 -
Don't understand why you would even want to.......surely putting different numbers on would increase your chances of winning something ??(but not a statistician so maybe it wouldn't..never understood the maths of odds etc!!)Best headline ever on local paper??
"Weight loss group doubles in size"0 -
No harm in doing it.
You don't even have to mention it or tell anyone, as the 'other winner' would be a secret anyway. (Unless you tell someone yourself!)You didn't, did you? :rotfl::rotfl:0 -
No it would not be wrong to keep the extra winnings but it is wrong to get the same numbers in the first place.
A £20m jackpot split 5 ways is £4m each. If you take half with your private ticket you get £12m and the others £2m each. Don't expect to stay friends.0 -
Why would you even consider that? Bizarre way to behave.0
