Money Moral Dilemma: Should I pay for my friend's stolen phone?

Options
This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...

I was on the beach in Barcelona with some friends when a couple of them decided to go into the water. One of them apparently asked me to watch their bag, but I was resting and didn't hear them. I had my eyes closed and someone took it without me realising; now they're asking me to pay for their phone that was inside - should I cough up?

They don't sound like "friends" to me!
Putting something like a phone or wallet in a bag is risky anyway as bags are easily stolen - mine stay in a pocket.

No. If you ask someone to look after something expensive you should at least make sure they heard you!

These moral dilemas are so poorly thought up! I didn't hear him ask that way he should have known you didn't hear him by you giving no response. Can i start writing these moral dilemmas? They'd be so much better :D

All sounds a bit iffy to me, I'd leave it to the insurance people to sort it out.
