Money Moral Dilemma: Should we sell our child's unwanted gifts?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...
My child was given some toys by family friends whose kids had outgrown them. She doesn’t really play with them and we’re trying to declutter the house so want them gone. Some of them could fetch £10 or so on Facebay and we don’t feel we should make that money – should we give it to our friends?

You don't need to hang on to white elephants.
Allow somebody else to get a cheap deal, and give your child a toy she wants.0 -
I totally agree with PBurton. There is no point having toys hanging around that your little one has outgrown. Sell them, get what you can for them and save the money until your little one sees something they really want and then you can happily say yes! and buy it with the money
You are happy that the house is uncluttered and your little one even happier they have the new toy they wanted

I would say give them away not sell them if they were given to you in the first place0

We used to get a lot of hand me downs from one friend, sometimes I'd sell bits of it (she couldn't be bothered) but to be fair, I work too, and I'm not a free selling agent for people.
In general if something made quite a lot of money, I'd give it to her for her DD, but most of the time she was just thankful it was out if the house and cluttering up someone else's!
It's a tricky one, it takes time and effort to sell things - often for little financial gain after fees are taken into account. I personally don't gave the time or inclination to do this for other people's stuff, I have enough of my own!!!Bossymoo

They were given to you. So they are yours. So you are entitled to o with them what ou wish, on behalf of your child.
It wouldn't even cross my mind not to sell them.Never again will the wolf get so close to my door :eek:0 -
Just to add - some people give stuff away because they feel guilty chucking it and can't be bothered to take it to a charity shop or sell it.Never again will the wolf get so close to my door :eek:0

We have a load of stuff, both new and secondhand, for our grandkids. What we have agreed to do, is sell the larger items (if they are in good enuf condition) and give all the smaller stuff to the local Ty Hafan charity ,which supports the childrens hospice.0

Sell them and use the money for something your child will actually appreciate.
My wife cleared out a ton of old toys on 'Facebay' selling groups and made hundreds from it. We bought the kids a huge climbing frame for the garden which they've spent all summer playing on so far (when weather permits).0 -
There is no dilemma here - take them to a charity that specialises in looking after under privileged children. Give them away as they were given to you - keep the kindness going.0
