"The combination of Three UK and O2 UK ... will also enable us to provide even better service and innovation to UK customers in a market that will remain fully competitive."

    "Fully competitive" is obviously arguable.

Re "better service" we all know well what happened after Orange and T-mobile merger. Decommissioned masts and ruined CS.

I'm interested to know the implications, long term, for o2's MNVO's, such as Tesco Mobile and giffgaff.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • The World's worst network (three) bought by the country's best network. Hmm I wonder if our O2 excellent customer service will reduce? Most Probably!

And I was thinking this morning that the (re-)launch of BT mobile and the proposed Sky Mobile would just complicate the market. There are plenty of new-ish providers to keep the market competitive.

You have that the wrong way round ... 3 (Hutchison Whampoah) are buying O2.

Really not happy about this, I have been an O2 customer for 13 years and couldn't be happier, as a family we have 3 contracts with Three - 2 mobiles and an iPad - and can't wait for them to end, the service is terrible and they simply don't care. If O2 customer service is managed by Three they will lose business if my experiences are not unique.

Really hope EU will reject this deal.

Seems odd, that there are so many crawling out of the woodwork now that they love O2, especially after the price increase debacle last year,
  • As an O2 customer I welcome this. 3 have long offered more competitive products and in particular their roaming policies are far more sensible than O2's, which seem to be stuck in the dark ages. I've enjoyed getting 10% off top-ups with O2, but i'd happily sacrifice that to be able to use my data allowance abroad as if I was in the UK.

O2 priorities? Think I've redeemed one code ever - a completely pointless marketing gimmick. I hope that's the first thing to go so they can plough some money into more interesting promotions, or dividends to the shareholders.
  • Some pundits in the technical press have been suggesting that Hutchinson who own Three might let the two companies operate as separate units rather than merging them.
Both are well known names and can make money for Hutchinson and keeping them as two companies might encourage the regulator to agree the deal - but time will tell and it may be up to a year before a decision is made.
