  • I use one in the shredder collector and then when it's full I just take it out, tie it up by the handles and put in the recycling bin.

Freecycle them to people in Wales please? :)
  • My friend Maureen taught me and others in a cardmaking group how to make flowers using old carrier bags!! They are washable, very long lasting and do not affect those with hay fever. They also look good as decorations.

Our bins are only collected once a fortnight (one week rubbish/one week recycling) so you can imagine the stink if I didn't wrap household waste, which includes scooped poop. Cat litter I generally put in the compost bin as it is vegetable fibre-based. I feel really sorry for the binmen when i see some bins put out round here. I do have bags for life, but they tend to get used for storage indoors in wardrobes or the loft.

Brill thread really enjoyed reading it. We have followed the reduce reuse recycle mantra in this house and now rarely get plastic bags. What we do have is plastic milk jugs. By weight i suspect they're ewuivalent to several plastic bags. Currently i wash them, squash them and put them in the recycle bin. Any suggestions there? Could switch to cartons but they also have a chunk of plastic

As an infant school teacher, I'll echo the need for plastic bags for taking home wet undies! That's where all mine go and we never have enough! Any school will be happy to take them off you for the reception children!

As for my own use, I use carrier bags for keeping my wellies and walking boots in, as it keeps the mud out of the house. But for grocery shopping, I always take my 2 jute bags. They are slightly different sizes, so one slots in the other, which is handy for storage. I've been using them about twice a week for about 3 years now.

I knit one with dd for her recycled art project at school. Actually turned out rather well :) ... google brings up instructions. We used nice pink house of frazer bags for the main part and black bags for the sides and handle.

    Christmas prezzie ideas!! Thanks! x

  • My Mum has a coal fire, she used to fill them with coal and keep them in the inside coal cellar. When the fire needed more fuel, she would just sling a bag of coal on - clean hands and less effort. Although we are aware that the plastic probably released some awful gas into the environment and so have stopped this now!

Here in Wales supermarkets have reported a fall of 96% in the use of single use carrier bags since the 5p charge was introduced last October, fabulous!
This means we do not have spare bags waiting at home to be recycled and now automatically take our own multi use bag with us when ever we shop

On a recent visit to a supermarket in England I was amazed at the number of shoppers wheeling out trolleys full of shopping bagged up in single use carriers.

i work for Waitrose and I dont understand how people use so many bags- I wish they`d adopt the 5p charge like Wales and Ireland.
