NEVER buy anything from traders on the beach!
We were stung on our holiday by a local group selling fruit on the beach. I asked how much and before answering the person chopped up the fruit, handed it to us, then wrote '9' in the sand (each), wanted almost 20 euros off us for 2 slices of watermelon!!! Did try to argue, but I didn't know the language and felt intimidated as they might have called over their fruity mates.
Just say no.0 -
If staying in a hotel and breakfast is included then we will usually make the effort to go as we can then skip lunch. If breakfast is not included we will usually just have an earlyish lunch. Drinks are usually expensive in hotels so we will make the effort to find a local off-licence for a few bottles of wine/beer/water (waiter's friend lives permanently in the inside pocket of the suitcase).
But like many others...I factor the meals/entertainment costs into the holiday budget and its all part of the decision whether or not to go. If the budget comes out too much we would usually cut a few days of the holiday instead of compromising on accommodation or activities. There isn't all that much difference between going for 10 days or two weeks in terms of enjoyment, but it can save quite a bit on hotel and car hire costs.0 -
Look on Trip Advisor forums or find a forum dedicated to the area you are going to visit, and find out who the local trip providers are. Chances are you'll get a cheaper trip and a much better experience than going on the tour operator trips.
I always split the clothes up so everyone has a few things in each case. That way if one goes missing, at least you have some clothing to use until the missing case turns up.
Buy cheap chick lit books and swap them with other guests or give them away at the end of the holiday. Here I go again on my own....0 -
If you are going out with children to a restaurant at night always buy them a cheap drink at the supermarket on the way there and let them drink it as they walk. Then they will not swallow the first drink in the restaurant in seconds necessitating two expensive soft drinks with their meal.
Great one - works for ME too as I always seem to arrive thirsty.0 -
I always take a bottle of cordial with me, and when i arrive i buy a couple of bottles of water, mix the cordial with the water and freeze them for long days on the beach, they take hours to defrost(as long as there not directly in the sun) so you have iced cold drinks throughout the day!!0

mediciations - always pack in your hand luggage and have a copy of your repeat prescription - this saves any hassle at customs, (if you have certain medications).
