Spill the beans...on your self-service checkout tips (beep)

I agree totally with those who have said that the Morrison's self-scan checkouts are the worst - by far!0

I always talk to 'my' self-service scanner in a calm, slightly patronising tone of voice. So when it starts shrieking at me, I advise it that there's nothing to worry about, and it should remain calm.
I also tell it that just because IT doesn't expect that item in the bagging area doesn't mean it is an unexpected item. After all, I tell it, it should be primed and ready to process any item in the store! I do occasionally tell them to keep their knickers on.
And when it thanks me for shopping at wherever, I tell it that it's very welcome. Helps to have a BBC-English voice, I think.
It may not keep me sane, but at least it keeps me my favourite brand of loopy0 -
If you have loads of your own bags and you need to add another one to the bagging area and don't want to be told that you have an unauthorised item - just scan something heavy, like a big carton of milk and put it in the bag you have in your hand and then put it down. It shouldn't think your bag is an unauthorised item if you do that.0

On the Sainsbury's ones at least, if you just put your card in it when you finish scanning, it will go straight to paying instead of you having to click "Finish & Pay" and then "Credit/Debit Card".
Will save you a couple of seconds0 -
Oh, I could write a HUGE list of tips for all you customers.
If you are going to use one, make sure you know how to use them! (mainly at the same people each week that ask for help when they already know what to do!)
If you are using your own bags, press I AM USING MY OWN BAGS(Sainsbury's). Don't just put your bags down IT MESSES IT UP!!!
When you scan an item you have to put it down in the bag, don't stand there trying to scan another item.
If you get 'unexpected item in the bagging area' the last item you scanned most probably didn't scan!
DON'T touch the bagging area or let your kids play on it then moan at the assistant that it's not working. Yes, it is working it's because you or your kid is touching it!!!!
PLEASE don't come through with a huge trolley full!!! Otherwise a huge queue builds!!
YES you can come through with DVDs, games, alcohol & other things with security tags on!
When you have finished press that button, you know the one that say's FINISH AND PAY! If you put your card in before this, it won't accept your card.
Yes, the offers do come off just follow those instructions on the top of the screen that say's 'press finish and pay then go back'. It's not hard & it takes the offers off!
When you put money in & wonder why it's asking for more, it's because you haven't put enough money in!! It was £5.98 not £4.98
If you put coins in & it doesn't register it, then it's probably gone into the hole under where you put the coins in!0 -
Always use the SS checkouts at Boots...Their SS tills always print vouchers, but the voucher prints BEFORE the receipt, the machine chops it off, and it falls down behind the bags in the bagging area.
Very often whoever is supervising doesn't clear that area out, so you can get lots of extra vouchers, and savings can really add up, particularly the £5 off No. 7 products vouchers.0 -
Fasten your jacket.
I've lost count the amount of times my jacket has flapped open and the pocket has got stuck on one of the wires that hold the plastic carrier bags and i've been told there's an unauthorised item in the bagging area. You'd think i'd have learnt by now...

At my local Tesco after 10-30pm there are no tills open, only S.S. Times when i'm really awkward i refuse to use them and the staff it seems have to put your stuff through for you. Maybe they just want rid of me.:cool:0

Not often you'll get to use this, but if the staff ever leave the machine logged in, e.g. after approving your alcohol purchase. Look for the "assist mode" button and press it.
This disables the requirement to put the item down and have it weighed before it will allow you to scan the next item. You can then rattle through your shopping at the same rate that the staff do on the proper checkouts and will never get an unexpected item in the bagging area error.
To get the most benefit, put your alcohol through near the beginning and have a partner with you to do the bagging.
Just make sure it does actually scan the item and beeps otherwise you may end up inadvertently stealing.0 -
TAKE YOUR TIME.
I know it seems counter-productive but if you are methodical with it - it is actually quite fast!
scan...bag...wait...scan...bag...wait
If you have your own bags (having used the Asda ones)- set that up first. If I remember rightly there is an option for "I have my own bags". If you set that up first you wont get the till screaming at you.
I am also a "till talker" - if she shouts at me I tell her to stop being so daft and give me a chance! OH thinks im mad but unless I have age restricted stuff, I very rarely need to call the assistant over.
OH on the other hand hates them with a passion and would prefer to stand in a long queue.0
