What a load of rubbish. Students could always get cashback if they moved back home to a house that has a tv licence already. You just had to call them, so this is not new. You just have make sure your bedroom door at your parent house does not have a lock (if you have a tv in your room)
I use multimatcher lazza which has the tab "bonus if 0-0"

"If you’re a lodger and have a relationship with the homeowner – for example, a family member, common law partner, a nanny, au pair or housekeeper: You’re covered by the homeowner’s TV Licence if they have one, provided you live in the same building. If you live in self contained accommodation such as a separate flat or annex you need your own separate licence."

A room with a lock would not be considered a separate flat or annex, exclusive access to washing and/or toilet facilities may.

The key thing about the term 'News' is the word 'new' that is in it. Otherwise we might as well call it 'olds'. A slow day at MSE central?

this has always been the case with TV licences...you can get a refund on 'unused quarters' if you're going abroad for a long time, uni student on summer hols etc.

    http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/topics/tv-licence-refunds-top7/

so i agree, there's nothing 'new' happening here, but it will be useful for some people who didn't know that you could get refunds.

Yep... the TV licence people send out the kind of letters that debt chasers get a bad name for. They won't leave you alone if you don't have a licence. If you tell them you don't have a TV they threaten with visits just to make sure.

So they put out this story to make them look like OK guys who just want to be fair to everyone. Looks like a cut'n'paste job from TV press release to MSE.

I got a 'threat-o-gram' of them some years ago as I hadn't paid for my licence for around 7 months,so I called them up & said the reason I hadn't was because I was out of the country for a while...where they asked...Iraq I replied, was then told about the cashback thingy.
  • Whether this is "new news" or not. It is very useful information to me, it is something I wasn't aware of and my son will be able to save that money.

With regards to the locked room, I am a bit confused. My son is moving from halls to a shared house in October, although there is a television in the communal lounge, he will also have his own in his room. We were told by the landlord that he will still need a licence of his own, seems a bit unfair. Kurtis_blue's post makes it sound like the information we have been givem is incorrect. Or am I being a bit dim!
