Doesn't seem like very much notice. Get your fixes in now...
PS. the next big collective result is announced on the 14th and on the off-chance that it beats the best current fixes that date would be within the 14-day cooling off period if you fix today.
( this is one website fronting the next collective https://communityenergyswitch.org.uk/ )
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

Yep, I read this and went straight online to get BluePrice March 2018 fix with EDF.

The underpinning assumption in going for a long term fix is that prices will keep on rising. I doubt that this will be the case given that we have already had the $/£ fall. Bear in mind that the wholesale cost of electricity only accounts for 32% of what you pay. If this doubled overnight, your bill would increase by about a third.

Just to clarify (source UK), electricity is the main culprit. In 2010/11, wholesale costs accounted for 51% of every bill: it is now down to 32%. Network costs have risen from 26 to 27% and operational costs from 14 to 15%. The 'biggee' is the 5 fold increase in Environmental, Social and Economic Costs which has gone up from 4% in 2010/11 to 20% in 2016/17. As the smart meter roll out continues, expect the wholesale cost of electricity to become a smaller % of every bill.

Didn't OFGEM just recently release a report saying that there would be no real reason for power companies to increase their prices?

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2017/01/19/ofgem-warns-big-six-not-increase-energy-bills/
“It's not obvious that there should be significant price increases across the market and it would be up to suppliers to justify this to us and to their customers,” said Mr Nolan.

I can only assume this is about them trying to force more customers to fix (and stabilise their customerbase) and / or someones worked out that the cost rise vs customer inertia is going to work out in their favour.

NPower has been a wreck since it tried to introduce SAP and failed miserably.

As a company i wouldn't touch them even if they were the cheapest on the market as it stands right now.

How can you drop your prices if you don't increase them?

They will do it in two steps, of course.
    Gas drops, then Electricity drops.
Two chances to grab the headline.

This is all a bit unfair on NPower. It is not alone in increasing prices over the past 3 months: NPower has come to the party rather late in the day. Most of the blame for the increase in electricity prices sits at the feet of the Government. I note that Ofgem has very little to say about that.

One of the reasons given for the increase - which everyone who reads these forums knows - is the cost of smart metering.

It just confirms what we all knew - that the cost of the smart meter fiasco will and is be/being bourne by us, the consumer, whether we like it or not.

Is there a web site where you can see the cost of one unit of energy for each of the energy providers?
This would be a better way of comparing providers by avoiding any pitfalls in the comparison sites.

If there is no such website, is there another way of getting the unit cost information?

Exactly what are the pitfalls of PCWs? The unit cost information is available on all supplier's sites and on PCWs. The latter always includes VAT.
