Dog Crates (merged)

Options
Now that Arnie and Casey are sensible enough to go away long journeys we are taking them camping at the end of this month. We are using up a ticket that I won for a ferry crossing that is 2 hours long and unfortunately Casey gets a bit bored in the car and chews whatever she can get to.

We have found out that the big dog crate we used for them as puppies fits perfectly into the back of the jeep but it is end opening. I have looked around and most of the small/medium crates are side opening but the large ones are end opening.

Anyone any idea where I can get a large side opening crate that they will both fit in and can cuddle up together on the journey?

Cheers

Have a look at http://www.barjo.co.uk/ they make the best transport crates. They do some which fold up so you can take them in and out of the car. It can be handy to have them out of the car, especially if you are camping, so you can keep them safe for a short while if you can't watch them (i.e. putting the tent up!) even if it is too hot to leave them in the car.

You shouldn't really use an indoor crate for transport, if they are going to travel in it you need something sturdy enough to survive a crash.

If a cage isn't strong enough it can crumple, or worse still, the bars can break and turn into sharp spikes. That applies to cheap/flimsy transport crates as well.

EDIT: you also need a crate with 2 openings, usually described as an 'escape hatch', so that if you are in an accident and the back of the car is damaged, you can still get to your dogs.

I got both my crates from Pet-Europe on eBay - excellent service and speedy delivery. At the time they were the cheapest (nearly three years ago), and my second one has a door at both ends which is really handy, especially if you swap cars, or stay in different places.

I'm guessing you are going to Ireland on the ferry? If you're sailing with Stena, you can take them onboard. P&O will only let you leave them in the car. We went to NI last September, with Tilly (that's her in my avatar). I had a (completely irrational) fear of us sinking, and her being trapped in the cage, in the car below deck, with no chance of escape, so couldn't possibly sail with P&O! At least with Stena if the ferry sank we could all swim to freedom. :)

Anyway, we just carried her on deck in the crate, and went into the 'Quiet Lounge' at the back of the ferry, away from all the slot machines and bars etc. :) We took a stuffed Kong, to keep her amused, and she was as good as gold all the way, even though she rarely stays in a crate for two hours (normally only car journeys).

Take plenty of time to get your doglets used to the crate, leave the door open at first and make sure being in the crate is a good experience for them, and build up the time they are 'shut in'.

Hope you have a safe journey and a happy holiday - Tilly loves coming away with us in our campervan, and I'd never leave her behind!

PS. Have just read your post again - could you load up the dogs then lift them into the jeep (as a 'one-off')?

Georgina, I read your post with a smile on my face. Yes the tickets are with Stena and we are booked onto the HSS. Unfortunately our dogs def wouldn't be able to go on deck with us as they are completely hyper and so nosey that they would be wanting out all the time to sniff at and sit on the nearest person to them that wasn't us! Fab idea but just not a practical solution for us - we would either have to leave them in the car or in the ship kennels and I think they would be happier in the car to be honest.

We had them both in the crte last night in the garden and they were not impressed but I think it would be a different story if they were in the car for that length of time, it is just annoying that you can't get down to the car deck to check on them during a journey.

I am going to be checking out the different websites you have all given me and hopefully I will have some success!

    Cheers!

The large crate I bought for our new addition that we're getting next week is too large to fit in our car. :o So we have to buy another, but sloping this time. OH is sooooo pleased. :rotfl:

Because of where we live and the PO strike, we're not confident that buying it online will ensure it is with us by Sat at the latest.

So as we have to drive to the Fife area in Scotland to pick the pup up, is there anywhere roundabouts that we could pick a crate up from? Edinburgh?Perth maybe...don't know where else.

Alternatively anyone know an online site that will guarantee next day delivery?
