BT broadband - should I take up their offer?

Options
BT rang to offer £2 pm discount on my broadband. On two previous occasions I have queried the download limit with them as I don't want this to reduce. This time the BT guy "promised" that the only change in the package was that I had to stay with BT for a further 12 months - everything else would stay the same. As I've always been with BT (I know, I know, they're not the cheapest .....) this seems like an OK deal, but does anyone know if there's a catch?

Two facts missing, which option you are on and how much you currently pay! It's likely that you could get a better deal elsewhere.

just got this info emailed from BT

BT Total Broadband package, Current monthly usage allowance and New monthly usage allowance from 1 July 2008
    Option 1
    was 5GB now 10GB
    Option 2
    was 8GB now 15GB
    Option 3
    was Unlimited still Unlimited

If you bought our BT Broadband service priced at Ł24.99 before October 2005 and haven't changed Option since, your usage allowance stays at 20GB a month. But you can now switch at no extra cost to our BT Total Broadband Option 3 package. You'll get unlimited usage for the same monthly fee. Upgrade to BT Total Broadband Option 3
Please note that at the same time, we're changing our charge for exceeding your usage allowance to 60p per GB. This will apply to excess usage with effect from 1st July 2008
  • I currently pay £24.99 so it would reduce to £22.99 which is Option 3

So you have been paying for an 'unlimited' package but do you actually need this? Do you know how much your actual usage is each month? see here and also see what other deals you could get elsewhere.

I am on the way migrating from BT to O2. I keep asking for mac code, and their final offer (retention) for me was £14.99, see whether how hard you want to push them.

£22.99 first nope, £18.99 nope, asking for mac code again (because i intend to cancel), and final offer £14.99

    Yes it is Option 3

    Just call 0800800030

Which just proves that their offer of a £2 discount to the OP was an insult.

Things may have changed over the years, but I was with BT on an unlimited package a few years ago, and they sent me letters complaining about my excessive usage (around 120Gb/month at the time)

    Yup :D
It is their basic offer, and they keep sending mail and email offers for £2 discount to me twice..
  • thanks for this. I wondered how I could check. My kids download more and more - and so do I! and I guess it will increase which is why I don't want to change to a package which limits this or charges me more if I go over.
