Most days I sit in the car (when it is hot) and eat my lunch with the engine running so that the air con is on.

Assuming that my car would normally do about 40 mpg does anyone have any idea how much fuel i would use in 20/30 minutes?

is your cars engine a 5 litre V8,or is it a 1 litre flat four?
it all depends on how big the engine is,what setting the aircon is at,how well/often your engine is serviced.
    lots of factors involved.

Its actually a 1.8 diesel. with the fan on the second setting usually

I only asked because a friend of mine with a 1.6 petrol engine said he wouldnt sit there with engine and air con running as it would cost to much.

I have been doing the same thing with various fully serviced cars for the last ten years

There's lovely! As if the moving cars don't chugg out enough nasty diesel fumes, we now have stationary ones too!

how many miles do you get out of the same amount of fuel when its warm and using the air con, compared to when its cold and not using the air con.
this should give you an answer.

I have no idea. and that wouldnt tell me the cost of that 20/30 minute period

I was only asking for a general cost of sitting with car idling for 20/30 minutes with air con running.

Like I said it is really only to settle an issue with a friend over wether or not it costs "to much"

That wasnt my point, was just wondering if you were comfortable today as my car is my office. Guess you were quite hot then, you could always join me in my air conditioned car:rotfl:
