Advice on Buying a new PC

Options
My Pc's 5 years old and getting a little bit slow now (amd 700Mhz, 768MB SDRAM) and it's time for me to get a new one! It doesn't have to be top of the range, and I don't really want to spend much more than around £300 on the tower...

What does anyone make of these offers on ebay?

  • Well I'd never buy a PC on Ebay - i'd like some certanty that the seller would still be around next week let alone next year. There are a lot of pirate windows floating around on Ebay as well

    My personal choice is Novatech

The first question is always what do you want to do on the PC - unless you want to play the latest games when you need a top spec PC esp in grahics - then someting near but not at the absolute bottom of the range will do the job and should be available around £320
    TANSTAAFL !
  • Basically i need a pc that's going to make good use of my broadband connection and be able to write a lot of data to DVD's, whilst also storing all my music, pics, files etc and enabling me to play football manager
  • Hi, I hate ebay with a passion! PCs of a well known brand are usually a better buy than a custom made PC - so me thinks anyway. Dell make very good PCs at very good prices when you can catch one of their offers. Have you had a go at building a PC yourself? It's not difficult. Have a look at http://www.eclipsecomputers.com for an idea of hardware components and prices or even a custom made PC. I buy my ram from them - great prices. As for ebuyer... they don't have a very good reputation.
Anyway, I personally wouldn't recommend any processor less than a Pentium 4 (with or without HT), 2.8GHZ with a 80GB HD. That's my Dell Dimension 3000 PC spec. It's fine for every day use, so much more faster and capable than a Celeron. Don't worry too much about the ram you get with a system as you can always add that later on if need be at a very reasonable price. If you want the PC for gaming, definately get 1GB of ram or more.

Its a good idea to see if there is a local pc shop that would build to your specifications and it could be upgraded as and when required. That way you can just buy what you need and perhaps use your existing monitor, keyboard etc and replace them at a later stage.

I have used the same PC guy for years and he is always available on the phone for any problems and can repair within a day or so.

  • I hate local PC shops. They suck and so do the people. Usually out there to make a quick buck. Watch out for the guys who update your PC if you don't do "DIY" coz they usually take out the good components and install a crappier spec... this is common apparently.
