Forgive me for being stupid but what can you get through these?

I mean don't you need a subscription to Sky to get any channels or can you get freeview?!?!?

    Thanks

    M
  • From what I can see it doesn't have a card slot, so you won't get the "free" channels on sky as there's nowhere to put your card ( well there is , but you still won't get the channels ;-) )

This system does not receive terrestrial or Sky encrypted channels

Looking at advert it quite plainly states not for Sky or Freeview.

This is for receiving channels on other satellites up there such as the old Astra, Eutelsat and more. These carry free channels mainly in foreign language and certain "naughty" channels as far as I am aware. It also states twin LNB so this can be tuned at 2 different satellites but whoever fits them will have to point the dish exactly at the satellite and that is a very time consuming task but can be done. Think about the satelite being several thousand miles away and somewhere on the horizon and you will get some idea. Fitters use a meter to find and lock the signal.

As far as I know this looks like a very good offer for the serious satelite fan who wants the overseas programs.
    I am not always right,

But I am never wrong !!
  • its basically a free to air receiver. as said you wont pick up any sky chns or freeview, only channels from satellites Astra or hotbird really. It takes no cards and does not have a cam slot for expansion, so its just a bog stanadard reviever. all you will be able to pick up is foreign channels, which are free, be hundreds of them but you wont get any "Naughty" channels as ll of these are encypted.

Its ok for begineers just to mess about with, and the dish is actually cheap as chips value for money.

I'll stick with my dreambox which has plenty of football & "Naugty" channels ;)

Can anyone explain what channels this thing picks up please?
Does it point the same direction as a normal sky dish?, my problem is trees so sky here only works in winter .
    Thanks

channels on 19.2 degs east can be found here, only look at the free to air chns tho

channels on 13.0 degs east can be found here
    http://www.lyngsat.com/hotbird.html

thats the 2 main satellitees, 19.2 degs east is where the old sky analouge dishes used to point, alot of people still have these dishes up, so just a matter of plugging the box into that feed. 13. degs east is about a foot to the right of 19.2 degs east, easy to find.

A dreambox is no way for a beginner, its a linux based box and you have to upload images onto the box to clear the channels. it took me 4 days to get it running, otherwise just buy a free to air reciver that has a slot for a cam so you can buy cards which will decrpyt the foreign chns.

here is a good place to buy satellitte equipment and dreamboxes, i have the dm500-s, tiny little box that does wonders once up and running! dreambox page on the left hand menu.

if you dont buy thr reciever from lidly, then i would recommend you buy at least the dish, really cheap buy that.

    good luck !

ps Japanesse, yeah i think there are a few chns somewhere on one of them sats.
  • Looks like the dish is supplied without the LMB
