Play.com CON --judge for yourself

As posted on this site I went to play.com to purchase what was describes as discount books and paid via my switch card immeadiately for my purchase.
Two days later I noticed on my account page that the order had been cancelled (and no refund given). I rang the premium enquiry phone line and was held in a queue (for quite some time due to the volume of calls--how often have you heard this) following which I was advised the book was out of stock but would be in again some time in the future and requested me to ring back later that week. Three days later the book was advertised as being in stock, so I rang the premium rate number again (and had to wait in the queue) only to be told the book was in stock but was £8.00 dearer. I expressed my disgust and was told I could have it at the original price and it was re-ordered. After a week the book had not arrived and I had to use the----expensive enquiry line (are you getting the message yet?) only to be told the order had been cancelled again --and they did not know why --and could I ring back again when they could determine what the problem was.
Later that night I rang the ......(guess what?) only to be told that they still could not understand it and could I ring back tonight(16/8/05)--and I said
NO----and I requested that they ring me---and Simon (from customer services said "certainly--I will ring you between 5-6pm". At 7.30 I was still waiting--so I phoned the enquiry line...again....where Simon said he was too busy but had resolved the problem---the book was out of stock and I would get my money back---therfore I had spent my time on countless occasions queing up to pay their exorbitant phone charges---thay had taken money from my bank account---they refused to even ring me to clarify the situation.
and when I asked them what they intended to do to return my money wasted on telephone calls they said---NO PLAY.COM --I am not allowed to write what I think about this companies tactics to diminish your bank account----but please think carefully--and make sure you have plenty of time if you intend to ring this crowd of ........!

I've been dealing with Play since 2000 & my experience has been much the same as jockettuk's

I've had couple of faulty dvds that were replaced & postage refunded without any hassle, but like jockettuk I contacted them by e-mail

that said, I ordered some books from them in January to take on holiday. the book section was new at that time & they were having problems with their suppliers not sending goods out on time & their system not updating correctly. anyway, the delivery took so long (I had ordered in plenty of time) that I was away before the books arrived. on my return they took the books back & refunded my considerable! postage without a quibble

it didn't bother me too much because they'd been good to deal with in the past, but if it'd been my first experience of them, I might well have thought twice about ordering again
  • I've only ever had one problem with these guys, and that was with a rare type book which wasn't in stock when I ordered it, and seemed never to come into stock. I would say the site is great for DVDs and Games and books which are common. Great for uni books, pricewise, but only the ones which aren't too obscure. I agree about the phone line - if it isn't in stock when ordering then it's worth paying amazon the extra couple of pounds to make sure you get it and don't have to phone them at all. The guys on the other end of the phone aren't always overly knowledgeable either.
However, as far as quick delivery is concerned these guys are great - even very close to Christmas. Always check their bargain sections, and if you're looking to pre-order anything, they're also very good. They'll be cheaper than most other places (particularly box sets) and more often than not a Monday release will arrive on the preceeding Saturday.

I've been using Play.com for years now. Never had a problem, and always found the service good. My last purchase with them was a couple of weeks ago. I ordered the box set of 24 series 4 and received it in two days, which was a couple of days before the official release date in the UK.

I've never had a need to phone them, so I can't comment on the telephone helplines.

Play have always been good to me. Even when stuff has gone missing, it's been quickly replaced.
  • I have been using Play for a long time and only once had to contact them about an item that was out of stock for an unusually long time.
Everything else has always been great and MUCH cheaper than the High Street price.

Only thing I have noticed over the years is that items used to take 2-3 days to arrive. Now its more like 5-7 days.

it's a shame you have had this experience harry4444, and it will be easy for everyone to say 'I've never had a problem', which again, I haven't, but I won't rub it in. When you say premium telephone line do you mean the 0845 one ? I thought that was charged at local rate ? Anyhow, I think you should email them and explain what has happened, and that you aren't happy, and you are writing to tell them so that it won't happen to others in the future etc etc... they might appreciate the constructive feedback, after all if you don't get told you don't know, and you might get the problem sorted.

Same here. Only use them for dvds and games , but excellent prices. I have never needed to ring them though.

amateur_saver your post made me think, & I realise now that I actually have phoned Play, at the time of the 'holiday books' problem when I didn't have time to wait for a reply to an e-mail. it was the mention of a 'premium line' that threw me, I'd definitely have remembered calling one of those!!!

clarification ... what I meant to convey in my garbled way above was that I was surprised to see the OP say he had to call Play on a premium line, because I'd never seen such a thing mentioned anywhere on their site
