Can virgin media disable use of wireless connection?? Urgent advice please.

I contacted tech support initially regarding my internet speed.

They asked me how I connected to the net; I told them wirelessly (which may I add was working fine till the telephone call).

Whilst he was checking the speed, I lost contact with them, due to mobile running out of credit (cost me over £7 to contact them).

I tried to get back onto the net, and it was saying I had no internet connection.

I telephoned tech support again and informed them of this. They proceeded to tell me (after getting me to check IP addy) that my router (airport extreme) wasn't working and was displaying incorrect IP addy. he told me that if I unplugged the router and connected from the modem to my laptop (using the ethernet) that I would get connected. Funnily enough he was correct.

My question is: can they do something at their end which somehow disables my wireless router? It just seems very suspicious how it was working fine before I originally telephoned tech support.

Please advise.

No they cannot disable your wireless, if anything the router or your modem either from the STB or directly from junction box in house just needs rebooting. It sounds like the router you are using needs to be adjusted perhaps.

I've had my router (d-link) do the exact same thing, a quick reboot always fixes it, tech support aren't very useful at the best of times.

  • I've done absolutly everything to get wrielessly connected again.

I use an apple mac laptop, a windows desktop PC. The laptop uses the airport extreme and the PC uses the airport via a belkin dongle.
  • I've rebooted and rebooted no joy. I've ran various diagnostics still no joy. Neither mac or PC can connect even tho both computers are receiving airport signal indicating a connection.

Try switching the modem off, router off, modem on, wait 30 secs, router on.

on the xp pc, do a
    start, run, cmd
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • apple airport extreme....is the router

I also have to use a belkin dongle to receive signal from router to PC. I have an apple mac laptop which already has an airport card built in.

  • Sorry, what do you mean by ICS??

I have an "ntl" modem which I have connected to that the airport extreme via ethernet. This causes a wireless connection. The mac uses it's airport card and the PC uses a Belken usb dongle.

This system has worked fine for the past 3 to 4 yrs up until I conntacted tech support about my broadband speed this evening.

make your router clone your laptop's mac address on the wan port.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it
