Posts With A Searchable End Date Poll / Discussion

Hello All

I realise this is another discussion thread  in the wrong bit but but it will get moved soon enough and also I realise that we have had this discussion before.

I'm not sure I was really for this idea before but someone did come up with a searchable end date - might have been E310108 or E080131 or something similar, not sure what's best. If we did it, it would take probably at least a month to become useful - probably longer ........ I would be willing to change my posts but they are only a fraction of the posts on here so I wondered what other posters think ....

I realise it wasn't a popular idea before but the board is getting so big now - even I can't keep up. For me I would at least be able to check at the weekend or when I have time comps closing imminently :) Either way .....

I would be happy to do it, has it been tried before? Only worry would be if newbies/people who drop in now and again would know what to do...suppose it would be easy enough for the regulars to point them in the right direction.

    too many comps..not enough time!

I don't think it's been tried before although the putting the end date in the title was introduced at some point after the forum was set up, and that seems to work well now. I imagine it took a lot of time for people to get used to it and even now, some people do it slightly differently and some people don't do it at all - but the majority do it the way it was requested in the stickies at the top :)

I don't know what the best searchable format is though so would need to work that out, it has been suggested to me that it is EYYMMDD

Sounds useful. Would need Big Sticky at the top like 'read this first'
I will go along with what ever obviously

There used to be one, certainly when I first got here there was an expiry date convention - now it's only mentioned in this thread :D

I agree - with the number of comps being posted now, we really need the ability to search by end date.

We need to come up with the right format though to avoid confusion.

Can we search on punctuation marks like full stops? e.g. could we have it as E10.01.2008 to make it a bit easier to read, and still be able to search on it? (actually, I'll leave it a while and try searching for this thread and see if I can find it by searching on one or both of these date formats :) )

For sorting the threads, I agree that it would be easier to have it in year month day format e.g. E2008.01.10, and that also allows people to search for all comps in a specific month (just in case the number of comps keeps growing and we end up with a sub-board for each month just to keep it manageable!)

This format would also allow us to sort the list if we weren't going to be around for a while (e.g. on hols) then we could easily find and enter all the comps that were going to close before we get back from hols!

Seems like a good idea to me. I can't see it would be too hard to remember to do it. And being relatively new to comping myself it's not been too hard to pick up all the MSE forum etiquette, so why not?

Actually, just had another thought - as you say, the chances are that it's the newer members who won't be aware of any new thread title convention, so I wonder if it might be possible to have a few experienced people who can't do everything that Board Guides can do, but are just able to edit thread titles? A sort of Senior Comper if you like (any crafty compers out there could make them badges!)

I'm sure the BGs are snowed under with merge requests and other things, so maybe if a few more people could just edit thread titles, it might help everyone out a lot.

Just a suggestion - not sure if it's even possible or useful :)
