Parking ticket advise needed please.

Hello All,

My OH commutes to work. She drives to the train station and leaves her car there in the free to use car park and takes the train for the rest of the journey.

Today she did this and as usual the car park was busy/near full. She parked in a bay which she has used before. When she got back to the car this evening it had a parking ticket.

The ticket states " Parking more than 20 minutes in drop off/pick up bays".

The only notice anywhere near the bay she used was this one;

To me it says 20 minute parking Mon to Fri. Meaning it can be used for any period during the weekend.

Does anyone have any advise? We are planning to argue the fine.

TIA, J

    I'd assume that that means parking limited to 20 minutes Monday - Friday, and you can park there all day on Saturday.

    It is very clear and in black and white, MON-FRI 20 MINS. I am sure they will drop the fine. I would certainly park there. I often park in 30 mins bays in my town centre on a Saturday afternoon, and the notice states "30 mins mon-fri". I have never had a problem. stick to your guns and appeal the fine.

    I don't agree.

    The wording says that it's a drop-off/pick-up point, not that you can park there willy-nilly at the weekend. In fact it doesn't say you can park there at the weekend EVEN for drop-off/pick-up.

    Yet it has the white P in a blue square, widely recognised as a "parking" symbol, not set down and pick up.

    Great you guys have given me an idea, I could try and drive to the University to go to the Library on a weekend. Certainly can't do that on a weekday.

    The restrictions clearly state mon-fri. I take that to mean the restriction is only in place 00:00 monday to 23:59 friday.

    As I see it..

    It is a pick up and drop off point which allows 20 minutes of parking Mon-Fri only. Outside of that, it's a pick up and drop off point only.

    I would act on what it doesnt say. They have limited it to 20 mins only because it is a drop off and pick up point FROM MON-FRI. However, if it was to include Saturday, it would clearly state Mon-Sat, as it does in certain parking bays that I have seen around.

    The fact that there is so much disagreement indicates a lack of clarity.

    Surely if parking is prohibited, there should have been a yellow restricted sign attached (from Direct.gov.uk):

    As I see it, the sign in the OP's post states that parking is restricted to 20 mins between Mon-Fri. So without the yellow sign, weekend parking should be ok.

    I think you should appeal as it seems ambiguous and should really have the yellow sign if parking isn't allowed outside the stated times.

    Also check out NPAS.

    Thanks for the comments:beer:

    The sign Crabman has posted is accompanied by this explanation on the DFT website;

    "Waiting in a parking bay is prohibited for part of the day or night, but permitted under certain conditions at other times. There are no controls operating outside the days and times shown on the sign."

    Again, this tells me the ticket was issued wrongly.
