Summer camps for kids: keep them amused while they learn

If you've kids you're probably already starting to think about what you'll do with them this summer. If you are, why not send them off on a summer camp, particularly one that can teach them a few things at the same time?
What is it?
The Lottery Fund has provided the Youth Hostel Association with money to run week-long activity-based summer camps for kids. Over 10,000 places are available on camps in England and Wales for 11-17 year olds. The camps teach subjects ranging from football to Performing Arts (including a visit to a West End show), media to athletics.
How much will it cost?
Parents who receive state benefits pay £25, those who don't, pay £100. The price includes coach travel from various places around the country, all food and accommodation.
As part of the terms of the lottery funding at least 40% of places will go to children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Are there any disadvantages?
Maybe. If you send them on the Media camp there'll be more competition for me in the future!

I think I'll just chuck my job. £25 if parents are on benefits £100 for me.
My sons mates already get £30 a week just to go to school+ attendance bonus,s. Free dinners. Parents get Free rent, 20% council tax. Free dental care ,prescriptions.Etc Etc
And now they can send them away for a Quarter of the price it would cost me.
I think I'll just leave my door open tonight. Just come in and help yourselves to EVERYTHING i've got and worked for.
I GIVE UP0 -

My daughter came home from school with this today.
Yes I also work so low paid can get it cheaper etc etc.
BUT
All I have to pay if £100 per child and I get a weeks worth of piece and quiet from my 2 eldest. Garden on my own in the summer - no nagging for McDonalds. Worth it???
I am already digging out my cheque book!!!!0 -
Is it only me who likes having the kids home for the holidays?0
-
You're not alone Magentasue I too love having the kids home in the summer hols.0

No!!!! I adore having my kids home and I'm so fortunate that I have a wealth of my own knowledge and skills to pass on in fun and interesting ways - nor would it cost me £100 for the week (actually £200 for the pair LOL)Magentasue wrote:Is it only me who likes having the kids home for the holidays?
BUT ... I can see how advantageous these week breaks can be to teach the skills I can't; to give kids an opportunity to test themselves in a safe environment, not to mention the social skills and team building exercises. The age range is such that, I know from my eldest grown up 3, that there comes a time when doing things with the parents is not only "uncool" but unwelcome!!! LOL
charlotte664 - garden alone in the summer??? You must have brilliant neighbours! LOL Even when mine are up the park with their Dad, the neighbours kids do enough bellowing and shouting to make the wearing of earplugs/headphones compulsory for any semblance of enjoyable, relaxing garden time

Or............... you could have the kids join scouts, cubs, brownies ,guides or cadets.
Both mine went on camping trips very cheaply in the summer hols when they were younger. They went on holiday 'without mum' and had a great time and we got a break too.Didnt cost £100 either.0 -
On the site it says that this applies to kids from England only!..
see this ...
''Do it 4 Real summer camps are supported by the Big Lottery Fund and therefore are only available to young people normally resident within England. ''
Erm.. am I missing something ? Racial Equality .. some of the camps are ACTUALLY IN WALES
I'll phone tommorow & post whatever 'excuse' is given!
