Part time work for a (just) 16 year old

Hi all
I have also posted this in the Student area but wondered if any parents or employers could advise please.
I wondered if anyone could recommend good part-time employers for my 16 year old daughter. She has done her GCSE's this year and is going back to 6th form in September. We are away at the beginning of August but she (we:laugh: ) could really do with her earning some cash to fund the rest of the school holidays and beyond.
She is very keen to get a job and has approached most of the local stores in our nearest town - some have said drop in a CV and they will put it in a pile and contact her when they ahve a vacancy, others have just said no.
Have any of you got sons/daughters who have worked part-time for shops / businesses that you would recommend? She is a hard worker and would love to work in a clothes shop as she wants to go on to study fashion design, but would consider most things. Thanks

What area do you live in? - Hard to recommend a business without knowing.0

Hi, my daughter is in the exact same situation so I'm interested in the response to this. We are in Manchester and she has been trying hard since January to find work to no avail.0

Hi, How about trying local venues for weddings and functions to see if they have any jobs for Waiting on staff. Many of my friends used to do this when we were younger (a lot younger)!!:D0

We are in Surrey - sorry for not specifiying, I was thinking more along the lines of nationwide shops etc. Thank you0 -
Do you know anyone who might give her a pt job, even not paying very much? I'm thinking babysitting or even casual waitressing or something? It's a good way in to getting something on your cv so that when you apply in other places they can see you've had some kind of experience. My first job was in a shop where my mum knew the manager. The pay was terrible but it was a foot on the ladder. In my experience bigger stores have more choices and tend to go for people who have already worked somewhere.
The other thing to say is that this is a bad time to look. If she is applying she needs to make it clear it's not just a job for the summer she's looking for. I'd say she's unlikely to get anywhere just now with shopwork and that she should do a round of applying in oct/nov when they are looking to fill xmas vacancies.
Hope it goes okay for her.0 -

Her CV doesn't look too bad - she runs an Avon round for me and also babysits, as well as working voluntarily at a livery yard every week (which she has done for 3 years) so she has something other than just school work on it. We'll keep plugging away but thanks to everyone so far for the ideas0 -
Hello, i remember struggling to find a shop job in town at 16-as everyone else was trying to do the same thing! I found a job in a cafe in TJ Hughes in the end-after politely asking around friends and family of people who could try and put a good word in for me. Maybe ask around and put a good word in for her?

I worked for Sainsbury's for exactly 5 years (15 and 10 month until i was 20 and 10 months!) before going to work for my current employer. It was great experience meeting a wide range of the public and realising if i didnt work hard i would have to stay there forever letting them take the !!!!!0

Hi admittedly it's a long time ago but I got a saturday job rather than a summer job when I was 16, in BHS. They needed extra staff due to hols and their saturday kids leaving cos they'd done A'levels and where looking to go to f-time work or uni. That way they knew I wouldn't leave after the hols were over and could work during the week in the summer if they needed someone.0

She has written an accompanying letter to send with her CV saying that she is looking for work for holidays and weekends so fingers crossed0
