Tesco and the housing sector.

If Tesco were to move into the online estate agency business, it would mark a significant opportunity to expand its financial services business. Having a property retailing operation would create a stream of new business for its mortgages and home insurance business.
Tesco has already established itself as a key provider of financial services, although it acts as an introducer on mortgages, passing leads on to First Active.
Estate agents have long been sensitive to claims that they rake in fees for doing little more than putting a piece of paper with a photograph in their shop window or erecting a sign outside clients' properties.
How do other posters feel about the moves of the consumer champion Tesco.

I believe they have teamed up with London and country for their mortgages for the property part.

The view you have on EA's was exactly mine before I worked closely with one and realised how much more they do than meets the eye and the public see.

Im on my way out now or else I would elaborate further.

I think Tesco has already trampled on enough communities and local businesses in their insatiable quest for world domination, thanks.

Could this be estate agents fighting back?

Hardly a consumer champion. It seems to have slipped everybodies minds that if you do list your property for sale with Tesco, you pay your £199 up front. If it doesn't sell, you are £200 out of pocket with no way to get it back.

It's also nothing revolutionary, there are loads of longer established sites out there that offer the same service, completely free i.e. www.listaproperty.com.

Tesco is a private sales classifieds ad system, exactly the same as placing an ad in Loot or your local paper. I doubt many people would be happy pay £200 for an ad in Loot or their local paper?

Personally, I believe the future of estate agents is with the true online estate agents, like www.brightsale.co.uk and https://www.hatched.co.uk. These guys seem to offer the best of both worlds. Low fees, no up-front costs, negotiation handling along with the web services of private sales websites.
  • Selling your home at a flat-fee of £199 is significantly lower than the average estate agent.
Tesco property market offers customers the choice of having full control over your home sale. It also provides potential buyers a great deal of information about prospective properties; aerial pictures, location of local schools, transport links and council tax information. The buyer is able to look at all of this before even arranging a viewing of the house.
Having online negotiations allows the sellers to achieve the best price for their property. The website offers comprehensive information guiding customers through the whole process of buying and selling their homes and consequently making the whole process a lot easier.
The website is a very new venture and the initial feedback we have had from customers is excellent!
