To Powergen ?

Hi there, in my continuing quest to save money (its my new life goal ;) ), I'm now taking a look at my electric and gas. I always thought changing would be a real pain, but I'm starting to get annoyed at how much my monthly DD's are costing me.

British Gas - £58pm DD
Npower - £37pm DD

Using Martins recommendation of comparing companies for dual-fuel, I have taken a look at Energyhelpline. Just typing these figures in will save me almost £150/year if I use Powergen :D

As I feel I'm paying over the odds anyway, I think this will be slightly higher.

So.....

To Powergen or not to Powergen ??

Advice greatly appreciated.

cheers

    Hiya,

I'm currently going through a dual fuel transfer to Powergen. As far as the savings go, they looked great for my circumstances. The transfer process itself has already run into problems.

The electricity went over on the scheduled date, although it's still showing my electricity details as pending. I'm not holding out much hope for the gas transfer (judging by other posts on this forum). The gas switch-over date has passed (last Weds) and nothing has been updated on my website account. The message displayed 'Pending, we are talking to your previous supplier', which has been the same for about 5 weeks now.

I'm reluctant to call the India helpdesk as my last call took over 20mins to explain that I wanted to setup my DD. I think the guy I spoke to had the wrong script! A previous query e-mail sent to Powergen took a week for a reply, when it should have been a couple of days. My experiences may be in the minority, but I'm already wishing I'd looked at customer service ratings as well as costs savings (got somewhere in-between).

If you do decide to go with Powergen, Good Luck ;)

    Hiya back :D

This is just the kind of post I was looking for. After comparing the various companies doing dual-fuel, Powergen looked attractive to me, but I like an easy life, and it sounds like they make you work a little. I almost applied earlier today, but decided to post here for advice first, I'm glad I did.

Thanks bonnie :D So instead of a dual-fuel provider, would I be better looking at an alternative gas supplier only? If npower are cheapest for electric, I "could" just change my gas. More to ponder ;)

    cheers

I too am going through a transfer process with Powergen from B Gas. I don't know if they have switched over - they haven't told me. Only correspondence from them has been about clubcard points and dd. First they set up DD for £24. Rang the dreaded Indian Call Centre - after a bit of explaining set up for £58. Few days later letter confirming that my DD was now £84. Rang again - waiting for another letter.

I did look at Customer service rating before switching. Either lots of people lying or I am just unlucky.

When we switched over from BGas and MEB/NPower, three times due to moves, they have always been very efficient, and their customers services very good.

We are now moving to SWEB, as they are now cheaper for us, though the last few weeks it has been hard to find out what the real rates of the two were, as these comparison sites rarely have the correct details for all the providers at any given time.

    Hi Pete

We pay £14 a month to GreenEnergy for electricity.
£30 a month to Atlantic for gas.

Every few months or so I do a check, and this is as good as I can get it. Cook by electricity, gas-fired central heating.

    Best wishes

Seems strange if you have gas you cook by electric - horrible thing it is!

    Hi BexTech

We cook by electric because we prefer it!! Had the kitchen re-done about 5 years ago, got a double oven fan-assisted built-in, and a separate hob. The hob is ceramic with halogen rings, was expensive to buy but is very energy-efficient so cheaper to use.

The gas boiler is in the fireplace in the sitting-room - it's a back-boiler with a gas-fire in front. We rarely if ever use the gas fire because this little house is so well-insulated, when it gets warm it stays warm (and in summer, it stays cool).

Also, reading of what people are paying for gas and electricity, I think we're doing quite well! We'd rather not feel patronised by giving us £200 in November to buy winter fuel, as if we were filling up a coal-cellar! All our household bills are paid monthly by direct debit so we don't pay for 'winter fuel' separately.

I too rarely use my Gas fire as CH keeps us cosy. I have a large 4 bed semi and all the rooms are larger than average. Our gas bill per month for the last few years with BG was £29.50 pm. Electric £24.50. My oven is Electric and my hob Gas. I also use a dishwasher and tumble dryer. Its interesting to see what others are paying for their energy bills .

3 Bed terraced house, gas central heating and cooking, we much prefer gas. My partner when she had her first place she had no choice but to have electric, and my first place again had no choice, when we moved the first thing we got was a gas cooker.

Gas £20 per month, and electric £30 per month, monthly by direct debit, slightly in credit.

Now if we could produce all the electricity by renewable sources, and houses were better built to be energy efficient, then I could see a day when gas wouldn't be required, as we no longer rely on the earths resources.
