What's the deal?
The coach company National Express* offers 'funfare' journeys throughout England, Wales and Scotland at the bargain cost of £1 each way. There are over 30 destinations and routes include Edinburgh to London; Newcastle to Sheffield; and Oxford to Birmingham.
How to get a cheap ticket
The key to getting journeys for £1 is to book your trip as early in advance as possible; tickets become available between three months and a week before the date of travel so keep checking.
Simply search for a funfare and next page will show all journeys on your chosen date. However, only a few of these might be available as a funfare. If a funfare is available, you will see "from £1" in the funfare column.
Funfares are exclusively available online as e-Tickets or m-Tickets and as such cannot be booked at the ticket office. See full e-Tickets conditions.
Other Cheap £1 Travel Tickets
Also see the £1 Megabus and the £1 Megatrain both of which have been around for a while. You'll also find full train cost cutting details in the Cheap Train Tickets article.

Wish I could get a 'funfare' from Lowestoft to London
2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040 -
Well I just tried it and chose a return funfare for 3 people (stated from £1 in the funfare column) and it came to £60. It was only £56 for a standard apex ticket.
Something wrong there!!
Just tried it only booking 1 at a time and its £2 each, so needs some trickery to work I think!0 -
Depending where you are going it's also worth comparing with Mega Bus: http://www.megabus.com/uk/stops/ and/or Mega Train: http://www.megatrain.com/stops/ as they also do fares from 50p (bus) and £1 (train) (one way) - the further you book in advance the cheaper usually, although weekend tickets seem scarce. Also quite rare with megatrain to get £1 tickets but often get £5 or £6 each way from Edinburgh to Lake District (oxenholme) which is still a lot cheaper than usual.."The happiest of people don't necessarily have the
best of everything; they just make the best
of everything that comes along their way."

had major problems too, ended up 6 hours late, missed my mates wedding. trains for me in future.0

Just tried to book a couple of tickets to London - chose the times that showed 'tickets from £1' only to be charged £68.
It's like Ryanair, only on the buses, just lies, damn lies and non-existant cheap ticket offers.

I had the same problem with GNER. Got an email on 7th February saying fares for £9.50. So went straight onto the website looking for these.
Couldn't find any so emailed them. Reply was that they are usually advertised 6-8 weeks in advance and go quickly. So I emailed again saying I went straight onto the website the same day as I got their email and couldn't find any.
They asked for dates and times I wanted to travel. I told them any day of a particular week and they came back with the cheapest they could find was £81.00 each (myself and 9 year old daughter wanted to go to London for a day trip) I said this just underlined the fact that these cheap trips couldn't be found and I could have a weekend away in a B&B for that price.
Unless you know a long way in advance that you want to go somewhere you have little chance of getting the bargains.0 -
Well, it did say 'Tickets FROM £1" so they're not lying, Machloop.
Many of these £1 fares are only available on certain routes, in limited quantities and you have to book up well in advance."Some say the cup is half empty, while others say it is half full. However, this is skirting around the issue. The real problem is that the cup is too big."0 -
I can see plenty of £1 fares on the route I want. Brilliant to take the kids to the Science Museum during the Easter holidays.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

Note:-
Funfares are normally only offered to and from major points, so if you normally join a coach in a village just outside a city and/or travel to such as London outskirts, check for and purchase funfare city to London center, and only use for the section you need. No driver has ever queried that my funfare ticket is for longer journey than I am using.0 -
That's the trouble with living out in the sticks like I do. The vast majority of these wonderful cheap offers never apply.
Oh well, back to the car I guess!0
