Various errors - any help much appreciated

Options
I have an old pc that the kids use to play games and I have just set them up for the internet as well via a 2nd usb lead.
Its an old mesh pc and I knew there was something wrong with it as I cant run a scan disk on it(get message about restarting more than 10 times), but while it was chugging along I left the kids to it.
Its running windows Me.
However it seems riddled with problems now, internet explorer wont open, get message Iexplore has caused error in unknown, outlook express wont open either and I get msimn has caused error in unknown. I aso get YUM errors?
Any ideas of what I can do? I thought I could wipe it all and reinstall windows, but I'm not sure how to do this.
Or does it seem like the hard disk is rubbish and I should bin it.
Thanks in advance for any help

Try running scandisk the W ME version of chkdsk
    • Click Start
    • Click Run and type scandisk in the run box
    • Click ok
    • Within the scandisk window select the drive that you wish to be checked.
    • Choose the option between standard and through. It is recommended you run standard first, if you encounter issues with scandisk then run the through scan.
    • Finally click start to begin scandisk.

    Rich people save then spend.
Poor people spend then save what's left.
  • Run scandisk/defrag in safe mode (F8 at bootup)

Is a virus scanner installed and upto date?

Try holding down control instead, at the point after the bios screen, and just before windows starts.

Anything that touches the hard disk will cause the scandisk to restart, this can be virus scanners, swap file etc.., so that's why it needs to be done in safemode.

if your problem just started happening, you may be able to use system restore to undo recent changes.

standard scan disk has finished, found errors and fixed them, so I am now running a thorough check which is going to take the rest of the day I think.
The I will restore to a month ago and see how it is. The main problems seem to have started after installing a netgear wireless adapter, I think the pc is too old to take it.
