Supermarket value ranges - what's hot and what's not?!

I'm trying to cut down on our food bill and have started trying cheap value ranges.
I think sainsbury's value choc digestives and digestives bars are fab but tesco's version of the same are not so hot. Asda's vegetable rice is great but sainsbury's version is tasteless. Tesco value washing powder does the trick but I haven't tried anyone elses.
All seems a bit hit and miss so opinions greatfully received!

Asda smart price:
porridge oats are good
tinned tomatoes are edible but watery
Peppers are good
root veg packs are good
OJ is good
Basmati rice is excellent
Butter is OK
tinned spaghetti is horrible and salty
Rasins/ sultanas are excellent
flour is good
dried pasta is too thick
tinned kidney beans are good
Tesco value:
bran flakes are OK
Tinned spaghetti is really nasty
frozen peas are excellent2009 wins: Signed Saxon CD, Solar Torch, Drumsticks, Priest Feast Tix, Watch, Hammerfest tix :beer:0 -
Sainsbury's value orange juice tastes identical to their ordinary orange juice but is loads cheaper. The difference seems to be that the cheap stuff is in a container where you need to snip the top open, rather than a nice little plastic flap thing.
Sainsbury's ketchup is pretty good too, as are their branflakes :j

Good thread! I buy my value goods across three super markets - depending on price and quality.
I buy my flour in any of Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury's.
ASDA is good for porridge oats, sultanas and raisins.
Tinned tomotoes are far the best from Sainsbury's. I also get their fresh peppers and mushrooms in their basics range - good for cooking with. I have been buying Sainsbury's basics potatoes but they didn't have them last week (they make excellent roasties and potato wedges). Somebody did mention that potatoes are in short supply.
Tesco's tinned broken mandarins are better usually than Sainsbury's and Asdas (less of the pips) - we have these for breakfast with the oats and our HM yoghurt.
Thank you to redspot24 for the info on the orange juice and tomato sauce at Sainsburys! It does actually make a difference where you get your value goods - I agree with stumpjumper, ASDAs tinned tomatoes are very watery (I have found the best to be Sainsburys).Enjoying an MSE OS life0 -
this is well worth the time it takes to read

Thigs I like from the Tesco Value range are;
porridge oats
plain flour
self-raising flour
orange juice
apple juice
breakfast juice
tissues
dried milk
frozen white fish fillets
Things that are OK
cheese is OK although Tesco have a long term offer on their English cheeses - buy 3 for £3 which works out cheaper than the value cheddar
butter is good too, but comes all the way from NZ
tinned tomatoes
baked beans
loo roll - the quality of the paper is fine, but it's really difficult to get the end of the roll unstuck
frozen oven chips were OK, but they don't seem to do them anymore
pittas - OK tasting, but not good for filling as they don't open out properly
washing powder
Things I've found to be no good
frozen peas
frozen sweetcorn
washing up liquid
soap
any meat0 -
Had forgotten about Value weetabix, sainsburys is great. The kids much prefer it to the 'real' stuff. They also prefer Sains value jaffa cakes as they are less chewy!
Great info so far, keep it coming!0 -
Asda's own brand ( not value) cornflakes are great - tricked two fuss pots into believing they were Kelllogs!NSD 0/150
