    great thread :D

Would it be possible to have a post for each shop ?

    tesco moneysaving comparison
    sainsburys moneysaving
    asda money saving
    morrisons money saving

or any others , where we could compare the value range/ shop brand and quality brand.

    etc ?

just an idea , so we can find what we are looking for quick .
    Kindness costs nothing :)

    Good:

    Aldi Baked Beans
    Asda Bran Flakes
    Asda Wheatabix
    Asda Coffee

    Bad

Sainsburys tinned mince beef and onion (too salty)
    Asda Vegetable Soup (too watery)
    Tesco Wheetabix

    Hi everyone,

As this is more of a shopping than Old Style thread, I'll move it over to the shop but don't drop board, where you should get more replies.

Martin's article What's hot and what's not a Lidl, Aldi and Netto, is a good place to see what the popular products are from those stores.

    Sainsburys basics

    Buy
    Weetabix
    Ketchup
    Custard Creams
    Jaffa cakes
    Beans
    Digestives
    Bread is fine for toast
    Chilled chicken curry ready meal
    Chilled fish pie
    Chilled salmon pie
    Plain/Milk chocolate

    Give it a miss

Tuna - I think brands vary between stores, but you can get good quality tuna chunks in brine for the same price as the basic range.
Minced beef & onion in a tin - very fatty and separates to give a vile orangey sludge on the plate.
Pasta - very thick and stodgy
Vinegar - may as well pour hydrochloric acid on your chips
Noodles - more like soggy spaghetti. Get yourself some Lidl ones instead.

Another one to avoid is asda basics mashed potato flakes (like wallpaper paste).
  • Asda smartprice-noodles-yum!
    Aldi ketchup
    Tesco own brand jaffa cakes
Tesco porridge oats ( made by moreflakes)
    Asda own brand cheese
Lidl juices- lovely the 39p stuff in the glass bottles is lovely
Asda mens shower gel 60 odd pence husband loves it
Asda own brand cat food, cats love it

Also shop around in place like homebargains, they often have a good selection of pasta sauces, pesto and tinned stuff. Shop wisely at places like Aldi. Lidl and Netto not all their stuff is cheaper than the likes of Asda.
I personally find Tesco more expensive than some of the other supermarkets.
  • when my brother was trying to earn a bit extra through uni he worked in a dairy where they packaged the long life milke etc, they used to put exactly the same milk in the value cartons as all of the others

I have never been able to find a Shreddies equivalent that tastes like the original. Anyone found one?

I've come to prefer LIDL's Malt Wheaties over shreddies. Around 75-80p for a 500g box.
  • We, too, love Lidl's equivalent of Shreddies like you Smashing. As you say they are only about 80p a box compared to £1.62 for the same size box in Tesco. Occasionally Shreddies have 100% extra free but they still do not work out as cheap as Lidls. At times when I have seen the 100% extra free I have thought should I be buying these then thought why when we really like Lidls.

Saisnburys 12 x kids crisps (onion rings, cheese balls, crunchy sticks) are pretty good for 49p, cheap as chips!
