Supermarket value ranges - what's hot and what's not?!

I use the value washing up liquid on stains in my washing, I leave it to soak overnight, and it usually gets most things out, at 13p per bottle it is way cheaper than Vanish, which I then try as a second go if the washing up liquid doesnt work.

We also use the Tesco basics orange juice, apple juice, skimmed milk and tinned tomatoes.0 -
I love tesco own butter - yummy!
Also Asda washing powder is fab. (not too good on sensive skins though)

Oh, yes and I forgot I also use the tesco value fromage frais which seems to vary a bit in texture but when your nine-month old is going through six or seven a day it is definitely a moneysaver!0

check out ALDI,they have great buys, also i make christmas cakes for gifts,so its the best place for cheap dried fruit, cherries, brandy etc.
try TESCO, for their own tomato soup..v good
and their own crunchy peanut butter, better than sunpat i think! and loads cheaper!
their own jaffa cakes are yummy
i also use their own soap powder, big box is about £1.50 and seems to be fine.
i think that M&S make the best digestive bisc, but poss not the cheapest!0 -
Sainsbury's Basics Tuna is sludgey - I lost a lot of it trying to drain it.
Sainsburys Basics Tomatoes have a lot of thin, watery juice and not much tomato flesh.
Flour - both Sainsburys Basics and Co-op eqivalent of value are good.0 -
Have to admit don't use a lot of value any longer as have swapped to Lidl for things I might have previously bought from value range, as I think for same price (or similar) quality better..
Lidl
Orange Juice
Tomatoes
Turkey Breast Joints
Cheeses
Tesco
Frying Steak (noticed that few people said never to value meat and tbh this is almost only one I have tried and its great - I grill/fry for wraps etc or chop up for casserole in SC)
Choc Digestives
White/Milk chocolate (if desperate I will eat but buy for krispie cakes for lunchboxes!)
Sometimes though I find offers in store make value same price as brands or better own brands so don't bother0 -
i use tesco value
orange squash,
lemonade
washing up liquid
cat litter
corn, peas, soup, long life milk, jelly, pasta, cheese, pizza, bacon, yoghurt
bread,washing powder.bleach.
i use it washing powder just ad a bit of soda crystals. the big box is £1.50 lasts for about 2 months. and fabric conditioneri will be debt free, i will0 -
With great respect, I think this thread is more than somewhat pointless.
Already, it must be clear that so much is down to personal taste. Not only that but there is also the smoke-and-mirrors black art of packaging which seems to fool a surprising number of people.
As someone said earlier, what goes into own label or even 'value'-type products is very often exactly the same stuff which appears under rip-off brand names ... I know this from my own experience in the foodstuffs industry ... and yet you will get people swearing that they can taste a (non-existent) difference...
I guess it's part of life's rich pageant that everything's subjective - but I see a certain futility in a thread which asks for opinions on this.0 -
This is a great thread :
Just a few of my thoughts....
Tesco value washing liquid (clothes not pots) is ok - I've found some cheaper tho in our Savers shop - 99p for 1 litre or 1 kg
Beans - usually buy tesco value
spag hoops - don't buy often but value brands are cheap n cheerful - aldi are good too
used to buy value flours but have started with organic
Aldi do really good value cold meat (ham etc)
Dont like :
value cheese - rubbery
value bread - doughy
value toilet roll - daren't try in case of finger through paper problems (is it a standard joke or a reality)
Thinking about "brands" having excess stock to get rid of - do any of you have a "Home Bargains" shop near you ? They often have stuff dirt cheap , nnot just food but toiletries too.
Branded and not so well know - I've bought Archers, Virgin Coke, Love Hearts, Schwarzcopf Country Colours, th list goes on, I cant remember half of them. Only problem is they have stuff for a few weeks, then thats it.:jWin £2008 for 2008 member No 678 £62/2008 so far0 -
I have no clue about tesco or asda - don't have one anywhere near, but from Somerfield:
Their OJ is good, but sometimes their multipacks are cheaper, when they have a '6 for 4', their flour is just as good as any I have tried, their tinned toms and beans are splendid, although their toms don't seem as good now they have 'improved' their range. Their milk choc is fine for cooking, and my OH loves it on it's own (although I think it tastes like that cheap stuff that kids gift sets are made with).
Their value crisps are ok, but their own brand are fab. Frozen peas are fine. Their own brand cheese is only ok for cooking with, I prefer to get mature cheese and use less, andI dislike all value bread that I have tried.0
