Store cupboard prices gripe

Has anyone else noticed prices on certain basics shooting up by at least half?
Since summer i've noticed tesco value/aldi orange has increased from 37p to 59p
Tesco own weetabix was around 69p now 98 ish.Aldis are 75pish but not as nice.
Value bread 17p to 29p
Aldi corn beef 49p to 69p
Tesco rice around 68 to 99P although gone down to 49p in aldi
These are all things I would have in my store cupboard as basics.Ive noticed my shopping cost rising.I'm a bit disgusted at price rise this isnt a few pence but makes a significant difference to those of us on a budget they arent luxury items but very basic no frills.
Has anyone else noticed this.I cant say ive noticed many decreases.
Can anyone still get them at cheaper prices if so where?It may be worth my while a little foray out once a month to stock up.

was only remarking in the supermarket at the weekend how the price of tesco and sainsbury's value foil has risen over the last 6 months- year!

I have also noticed it one a number of other products.

A new report yesterday noted that while shops such as wollies are struggling this year with profits down by at least 6%, tescos profits are up about 6% and the supermarkets are seemingly leaving the price war behind and actually putting prices up. Will certainly made me think about prices again a little more carefully next time i am shopping.

there apparently is/was an international shortage of rice, there was something on tv about it. Its true theres very little in our local Mr Ts. and the price does seem to have gone up. I found some in a local turkish grocers thats cheaper than tescos so I bought that - a lb for 49p which I didnt think was bad for basmati

Perhaps this is how Mr.T is making its profits then by increasing prices of basic items so making the average shopper pay more.Do you think there is price fixing with other stores?I'm starting to think there is.
I'm very wary of special offers as mostly they always seem unhealthy options.

Oh thanks! Missed those reports but about a month ago couldn't understand why the only rice anyone had on the shelf was basmati or pudding rice.

Went to 3 supermarkets in 2 weeks and couldn't find any "normal" rice at all! Then a bit later they seemed to have full stocks again. Guess everyone panicked and bought up extra or something!! :rolleyes:

yes tecos basic range has hot through the roof! i was lookng at hier pasta sauce and fishfingers on friday. sauce was 25p now 39p i think and the fish finger wrere just 17p now 47p!!! its outragous. before i discovered coupons i relied on the cheap stuff to get by and i worked out i couldnt afford the shoping i did before with the price hike!! :eek: (thank god for coupons!)

Maybe you should write to Paul Lewis, at BBC Radio 4's "Moneybox Live", or the Food Programme, or Woman's Hour. They might do an article about it, and give it some publicity.

I think the supermarkets use these value offers as loss leaders to get us into their store.

Then the prices start to creep and they hope we won't find somewhere else to shop.

im afraid they are mistaken then!

For people on a very limited budget the value foods are the only ones many can afford. (i have a shopping budget of £30 for 3 people a week) So i rely heavily on the prices being cheap(when i havent got coupons!) So if they continue to rise the price of the value brands then i will have no other option but to shop somewhere else as i simply wont be able to feed my family adequetly for less products for the same money. Im sure i could go to a cheaper german supermarket and get the same for cheaper

Hi i was in two minds to recommend this as you're all mse users but netto do a big bag of rice but unfortunately i don't eat it so i can't tell you how much it is, but it must work out cheaper than the main supermarkets, i was saying to my nan the other day how much basic foods have gone up, i now won't shop at a main supermarket unless necessary and the price of fruit is silly, three bananas cost me 85p the other day.

Buy your fruit and veg in Lidl, its so muc cheaper. I love fresh pineapple but at £1.99 (minimum) in Tesco etc no chance, but its only 49p in Lidl :T
