Help with unwanted emails

Hi, i keep getting emails about the stock market, i will click on message then block sender and then yes to block the sender...the problem is i will get more emails all along the same lines about the stock market but with a different email address...is there any way that i can stop this ? i am getting between 10 and 15 per day.

Hi,

It's unlikely you will be able to stop them. There is little point in blocking the email addresses as they rarely ever send from the same ones.

Your best bet is to get a spam filter (Zone labs do one) and then set a rule in your email client to move spam to a specific folder. Every few days you can then have a quick check through to ensure no worthy email are delivered there.

10-15 per day isn't bad, today I had 78 at work <cry>.

I get loads of them and others. There's nothing you can do other than delete them.

You dont have to download spam to your PC at all.

I use MailWasher to check and delete all unwanted email on the servers before I download any email to my computer. That way you can get rid of any spam+attachments before it gets near your PC. The last freeware version (1.33) is available here:

Click on the Download link there not on the website link. MailWasher 1.33 allows you to check multiple email accounts if you have more than one. I check five. More recent versions dont. It also lets you set up filters to tag emails for deletion. For example you can set up a filter so that if the spam is not directly addressed to you (e.g. [EMAIL="gxtrdse@yourdomain.com"]gxtrdse@yourdomain.com[/EMAIL] instead of [EMAIL="yourname@yourdomain.com"]yourname@yourdomain.com[/EMAIL]) the email can be automatically tagged for deletion. It's not too difficult to set up and worth trying as its free. And best of all it stops the spam and any attachments from getting onto your PC.

By the way, dont bounce the spam as it wont go back to the sender just to someone whose address has been forged. Just delete it.

Also you may want to consider closing the e-mail address & then starting with a new one, but also set up a couple more addresses while you're about it - most ISPs let you have at least 5 or more. Only give your 'main' e-mail address to close family/friends & use another for when you need to log into a site or give to companies etc., then when that one starts getting too much spam just close it & start up another, still hopefully keeping you 'main' address clean.

I'd also recommend Mailwasher as well.

You could also try mailwasher. https://www.mailwasher.net, its free and allows you to see what email is on your server and gives you the opprtunity to delete it before downloading into your email box. If you upgrade to the paid version you can even bounce the email back to the spammers so it looks like your email address is dead. Not only does this p*ss them off as their email box gets filled with cr*p too, but it also deters them from selling your address on as active.

Been a great use to me.

surely all mailwasher does is divert the spam to a folder. It doesn't actually stop the spam.

Difference is that it filters out the spam BEFORE you download yor email, the idea being that you don't waste time downloading the spam.

That's not what I said at all. It allows the user to see what is on the server before downloading it. Why not have a look at the website given above?

Bounced spam doesnt go back to the sender. They aren't that stupid. They forge addresses in the FROM field so it always goes back to someone else - often me!
